Job Title: Principal
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Salary: £55,000 - £65,000
We are working with an independent special educational needs school in York to recruit a Principal. Supporting learners aged 11 to 16 with a broad range of needs, including Autism, SEMH and speech, language and communication needs, you will take on the day-to-day running of the school as the proprietor's operational lead, with responsibility for teaching and learning, safeguarding and quality. This is a varied and rewarding role where you will genuinely shape the culture of the school and the outcomes of every learner within it. This is the perfect opportunity for someone who wants to lead a school where safeguarding is the number one priority and every child's progress matters.
What you'll be responsible for:
- Leading the school on a day-to-day basis, acting as the proprietor operationally and making sure teaching and learning is consistently strong.
- Holding overall responsibility for safeguarding and child protection, working closely with the Designated Safeguarding and Prevent Lead.
- Ensuring the school meets all statutory requirements, including the independent school standards, local authority agreements and Ofsted expectations.
- Leading and developing the senior leadership team, the senior management team and the school community board.
- Overseeing the curriculum, including GCSE provision, assessment and exams, and carrying out termly internal quality audits.
- Using performance data to put the right interventions in place for every learner's SEND and educational needs, including timely EHCP reviews.
- Managing budgets, occupancy and local authority contracts to keep the school financially viable.
- Recruiting best in class staff through safer recruitment, and identifying and developing the future leaders within the team.
- Building exemplary partnerships with parents, local authorities and external partners, and handling complaints and concerns swiftly.
- Representing the school at industry events, and at local authority and LADO reviews where needed.
This role will be perfect for:
- An experienced school leader with a minimum of 5 years post qualification and a strong track record of working with children with additional needs.
- You have a thorough understanding of safeguarding, Prevent and the regulatory framework, and hold the relevant safeguarding qualifications in line with Ofsted guidelines.
- You lead with empathy, resilience and emotional intelligence, you have restorative practice experience, and you are comfortable walking the floor and stepping into the classroom when needed.
