School Van Driver

As a School Van Driver, you will be responsible for operating vehicles in accordance with traffic laws and safety regulations, assisting students with special needs, and maintaining excellent customer service standards. Duties

• Safely operate school vans, transit buses, or paratransit vehicles following all traffic laws and vehicle codes.
• Transport students to and from school, extracurricular activities, field trips, and other approved destinations on schedule.
• Assist students with mobility needs, including wheelchair assistance and behavior management, ensuring their safety and comfort throughout the journey.
• Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including CPR and first aid when necessary.
• Conduct pre-trip inspections of vehicles to ensure proper functioning and report any maintenance issues promptly.
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and emergency responders using clear language and active listening skills.
• Respond quickly to traffic changes or unexpected delays by adjusting routes or schedules while maintaining safety standards.
• Maintain accurate records of trips, student attendance, incident reports, and vehicle logs in compliance with transportation safety regulations.
• Uphold student discipline policies by managing behavior professionally and fostering a positive environment onboard.
• Ensure passenger safety at all times by adhering to emergency stop procedures, vehicle codes, and traffic laws.

Qualifications

• Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for school bus or van operation.
• Proven experience driving buses or vans in a school or transit setting; experience working with children is highly preferred.
• Knowledge of transportation safety regulations, traffic laws, student discipline strategies, and emergency response procedures for transportation.
• First aid certification including CPR is required; willingness to obtain or maintain certifications as needed.
• Ability to perform heavy lifting when assisting students or loading equipment safely.
• Excellent communication skills in English; multilingual abilities are a plus for diverse communities.
• Strong understanding of behavior management techniques and student behavior policies.
• Ability to respond quickly to traffic changes or emergencies with calmness and professionalism.
• Knowledge of wheelchair assistance procedures and senior care considerations is advantageous.
