Science Laboratory Technician

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• The preparation of materials and equipment for science lessons.
• Maintaining science laboratories and preparation rooms and their equipment, and services in good order.
• General duties in support of the teachers in the Science Department.

Preparation of science materials and equipment

• Carry out risk assessments for technical activities using CLEAPSS guidance and HAZCARDS;
• Managing safe disposal of waste in line with CLEAPSS guidance;
• Collecting apparatus and chemicals from storage;
• Preparing necessary solutions; and ensuring all solutions are labelled appropriately, including hazard symbols;
• Checking individual components in and out for class use;
• Arranging for apparatus including worksheets, books and audio-visual aids to be available, in rooms, for lessons;
• Preparing experiments, setting up apparatus and equipment for demonstrations and practical lessons as requested by teaching staff;
• Preparing the equipment or chemicals as assigned by the school's teacher-in-charge of the science project.
• Trialling suggested practical activities as requested by science teachers;
• Liaising with staff over use of equipment and stock;
• Assisting with collection and cataloguing of sundry worksheets, books, audio-visual aids and materials;
• Returning apparatus, etc. and chemicals to storage as soon as practicable;

Routing maintenance of science laboratories and preparation rooms, their equipment and services:

• Keeping laboratory clean and tidy in conjunction with the teacher in charge of the room;
• Cleaning the sinks, chemicals on bench tops, spillage of chemicals on floor;
• Storing materials tidily and ensuring that they are appropriately labelled;
• Keeping equipment clean;
• Looking after animals and plants kept by the department;
• Cleaning of goggles and laboratory coats;
• Cleaning of safety screens, fume cupboards and other items;
• Carrying out minor repairs, alongside organising the repair and servicing of equipment when necessary.

Maintaining the stocks of science chemicals and equipment, for example:

• Keeping an inventory of all solutions and equipment, including breakages;
• Taking stock of consumables, stationery and books;
• Advising Head of Department on stock replacement needs;
• Ordering equipment from local suppliers;
• Checking and receiving deliveries and invoices, with assistance from the Head of Department;
• Purchasing of consumables from local shops or markets if required;
• Keeping records of purchases.

Requirement

• Bachelor’s degree in Science, Laboratory Technology, or a related field.
• Previous experience working in a school or educational laboratory setting is preferred.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures, chemical handling, and equipment maintenance.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with teachers and students.
• Ability to communicate in English.
