About the Role

Visual Architects is looking for a skilled and creative Polystyrene Sculptor to join our Production team. You will create high-quality sculptures, props, scenic features and bespoke installations for events, exhibitions and immersive environments.

This is a practical workshop-based role requiring strong artistic ability, technical accuracy and the confidence to work from drawings, reference images and creative briefs.

Key Responsibilities

• Sculpt and shape polystyrene to produce props, characters, architectural features and large-scale scenic pieces.
• Work from technical drawings, 3D designs, reference images and measurements.
• Use hot-wire cutters, carving tools, sanders and other workshop equipment safely.
• Apply coatings, fillers and finishes to strengthen and prepare sculptures for painting.
• Replicate textures and details such as stone, brick, wood, rock and organic forms.
• Scale designs accurately while maintaining the intended proportions and appearance.
• Collaborate with designers, scenic artists, carpenters and the wider Production team.
• Provide realistic material and production-time estimates.
• Complete work to the required quality within demanding project deadlines.
• Identify production issues early and raise them with the relevant manager.
• Assist with the safe handling, packing and preparation of completed pieces.
• Maintain a clean, organised and safe working area.
• Follow all company health and safety procedures, including the correct use of PPE.
• Minimise material waste and dispose of polystyrene and chemicals correctly.

Skills and Experience

Essential

• Proven experience in polystyrene, foam or scenic sculpting.
• Strong freehand sculpting and carving ability.
• Good understanding of shape, scale, proportion and three-dimensional form.
• Experience using sculpting tools and hot-wire cutting equipment.
• Ability to interpret creative briefs, drawings and visual references.
• Excellent attention to detail and finishing standards.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a fast-paced production team.
• Good time-management skills and the ability to meet fixed deadlines.
• A practical, adaptable and solutions-focused approach

Desirable

• Experience within events, theatre, film, exhibitions, themed environments or visual merchandising.
• Experience applying hard coatings, fillers, fibreglass or protective finishes.
• Scenic painting and texturing skills.
• Experience creating moulds or working with CNC-cut components.
• Knowledge of manual-handling and workshop safety requirements.

Working Requirements

This is a hands-on, workshop-based role. The work may involve standing for extended periods, manual handling, working with dust and chemicals, and using powered or heated tools. Appropriate training and personal protective equipment will be provided where required.

Some flexibility may be necessary during busy production periods and when projects have fixed installation dates.
