Security Coordinator

Job Summary

Temple Beth El is seeking an experienced Security Coordinator to help protect our congregants, students, staff, clergy, visitors, and campus. This is a highly visible role for a security professional who brings sound judgment, calm decision-making, discretion, and a service-oriented approach to safety. The Security Coordinator reports to the Director of Security and supports daily operations, worship services, school activities, programs, and special events.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a professional, visible security presence throughout the Temple building, sanctuary, school, grounds, and parking areas.
• Monitor entrances, exits, CCTV, alarms, and access-control systems to help prevent unauthorized access and identify concerns.
• Respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies, unusual activity, and disruptive situations while protecting people and property.
• Provide an armed, concealed-carry response capability in accordance with applicable law, Temple policy, licensing requirements, and safety protocols.
• Support security coverage during arrivals, recess, dismissal, worship services, programs, and special events.
• Assist with emergency planning and drills and coordinate with contracted security personnel when assigned.
• Prepare timely, accurate incident reports and communicate effectively with Temple leadership, staff, clergy, school personnel, law enforcement, and emergency responders.

Requirements

• At least five years of relevant experience in law enforcement, investigations, military service, or professional security.
• Strong situational awareness, de-escalation ability, judgment, and decision-making skills in high-pressure situations.
• Clear and respectful verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare detailed reports.
• Professionalism, discretion, reliability, and the ability to safeguard confidential information.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include days, afternoons, evenings, weekends, Jewish holidays, worship services, and special events.
• Ability to meet all legal, licensing, training, and Temple requirements for an armed security position.

Preferred Background

• Retired Michigan law enforcement officer in good standing with a valid Michigan Concealed Pistol License and any authorization required to carry in restricted premises.
• Associate degree or higher in criminal justice, public safety, security management, or a related field.
• Experience in a school, house of worship, nonprofit, or community-based setting.
• Current CPR, AED, and first aid certification.
• Experience with emergency-preparedness training, CCTV, alarms, and electronic access-control systems.

Conditions of Employment

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all lawful pre-employment requirements applicable to this role. These may include a background investigation, review of work history and training records, drug and alcohol screening, medical and psychological fitness-for-duty evaluations, credential verification, and firearm qualification. The selected candidate must remain qualified and authorized to perform all assigned duties throughout employment.
