Protect. Serve. Preserve. Be part of something meaningful.

The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) is seeking a dependable, observant, and service-minded Part-Time Security Specialist to help protect our visitors, staff, collections, historic properties, buildings, gardens, and trails.

This is more than a traditional security position. As a Security Specialist, you will be a visible and welcoming presence throughout the MSV campus while helping ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone who visits, works, and participates in programs at the Museum.

Working under the general supervision of the Safety & Security Supervisor, you will monitor museum spaces and grounds, operate security and life-safety systems, respond to alarms and emergencies, document incidents, assist visitors and staff, and help maintain the security of the Museum's facilities and collections.

What You’ll Own

Monitor galleries, historic houses, gardens, grounds, and trails during business hours and after hours.

Operate and monitor security systems, including radios, CCTV, fire alarms, intrusion detection, and other emergency systems.

Respond professionally and appropriately to alarms, disturbances, injuries, illnesses, and other emergencies.

Investigate security or safety concerns and determine when assistance from law enforcement, fire, EMS, or other emergency responders is needed.

Perform opening and closing procedures and other security and operational procedures.

Monitor special programs, events, and activities throughout the Museum.

Control access to restricted areas and assist with the ingress and egress of employees, vendors, contractors, and maintenance personnel.

Maintain accurate security logs, badge records, incident reports, and other required documentation.

Interact professionally and respectfully with visitors, staff, vendors, contractors, and members of the public.

Deliver mail and packages throughout the Museum.

Serve as the workers' compensation liaison with the insurance company in the absence of the HR Director.

Participate in staff training and complete required annual training.

Perform other duties as assigned.

What You Bring

We're looking for someone who is calm under pressure, attentive to detail, dependable, and comfortable interacting with people. The ideal candidate understands that excellent security combines vigilance and good judgment with professionalism and customer service.

Minimum qualifications include:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience working with the public.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to use computers and common workplace applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Ability to learn and operate security and life-safety systems.

Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Ability to successfully complete a required police/background check.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Preferred qualifications include:

One year of security, public safety, law enforcement, military, emergency response, or related experience.

Experience operating security systems, CCTV, access control, alarms, or two-way radios.

CPR/First Aid/AED certification.

If you are not currently CPR/First Aid/AED certified, you must be able to obtain certification within your first 60 days of employment.

The Work Environment

Security at the MSV is active and varied. You may spend part of your shift monitoring galleries or historic properties, responding to a radio call, walking the grounds or trails, assisting a visitor, monitoring an event, or responding to an unexpected situation.

The position requires the ability to:

Walk throughout museum buildings, historic properties, gardens, grounds, and trails.

Stand for extended periods. Bend, kneel, reach, and occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.

Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Respond calmly and effectively during stressful or emergency situations.

Your Schedule

This is a part-time, non-exempt position working approximately 16–29 hours per week. The schedule is flexible but requires availability for evenings, weekends, and occasional special events.

Typical shifts may include:

Weekdays: approximately 4:00 p.m.–8:30/9:00 p.m.

Weekends: approximately 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. or 4:00 p.m.–8:30/9:00 p.m.

Special Events: Additional or adjusted evening and event hours may be required.

Schedules may vary based on Museum operations, programs, events, and security needs.

Why Work at the MSV?

At the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, every employee contributes to an organization dedicated to connecting people with the art, history, and culture of the Shenandoah Valley.

As a Security Specialist, you'll play an important behind-the-scenes role in making that experience possible. Your presence helps create a welcoming place where visitors can explore, learn, gather, and enjoy the Museum with confidence.

You'll work in a unique environment that includes museum galleries, historic properties, gardens, trails, special events, and a diverse community of visitors and staff.

If you are dependable, observant, people-oriented, and take pride in protecting places and people, we would love to hear from you.
