Senior Accountant

Who we are

Oxford Edge is a Christchurch-based chartered accounting and advisory firm working with a diverse range of clients, with a focus on the SME sector. We combine strong technical accounting with practical commercial advice, helping clients understand what the numbers mean and what to do next.

We are looking for a Senior Accountant who enjoys working with clients, solving problems and contributing ideas. You will join a supportive team, work closely with our Directors and Client Managers, and have an opportunity to keep building your commercial and client-facing capability.

The opportunity

This is a broad Senior Accountant role for someone who wants to move beyond simply producing accounts.  We are looking for someone who is results-oriented, communicates with confidence and sees clients as people, not numbers. You will work directly with clients, support Directors and Client Managers, and help turn financial information into useful commercial insight.

You will play an important role in delivering our service promise to clients. Your work will include reviewing financial information, responding to tax and accounting queries, troubleshooting Xero, preparing management reporting and projections, and identifying opportunities to add value to our clients’ businesses. You will also contribute to projects involving systems, artificial intelligence, technology, process improvement and business analysis.

Relationships are central to how we work. Our Senior Accountants are visible to clients and are expected to understand their business, ask good questions and communicate the story behind the numbers. You will support a varied portfolio of SME clients across a range of industries.

You will work alongside Directors who are accessible and involved with the team day to day, giving you exposure to the commercial conversations they are having with clients. Your input is welcomed - whether that is an idea for how we could do something better, improve the way we deliver services to clients or strengthen our team. If you enjoy problem solving, taking ownership and building trusted client relationships, there is plenty of scope to grow in this role.

We are primarily recruiting for a full-time position; however, we are open to considering a part-time arrangement for the right candidate

About you

• Around 4 years’ accounting experience in a CA firm or similar professional services environment
• Strong accounting systems capability; Xero experience is preferred, or you will be able to learn new systems quickly
• An interest in using technology to work smarter and identify opportunities for clients
• Strong technical accounting knowledge, commercial judgement and confidence to identify issues and recommend practical next steps
• Confident communication skills and a genuine interest in building strong client relationships and identifying opportunities to add value
• A positive, practical approach and a sense of humour definitely helps
