Senior Accountant

POSITION AT A GLANCE
Location: Remote - Philippines
Engagement: Independent contractor, ongoing full-time capacity
Reports to: Managing Director
Rate: A$18-A$24 per hour, depending on experience and capability

About the role

This is not simply a bookkeeping or transaction-entry role. You will be responsible for the day-to-day integrity of Verstand's accounting records, monthly close, management reporting, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, invoicing, GST and recurring ATO obligations. You will also help shape the next generation of Verstand's finance systems. We currently use Reckon One. Part of the role will be to assess whether our existing arrangements remain suitable, define future requirements, evaluate alternatives and, if a replacement system is approved, lead the finance-side migration, testing and implementation.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain accurate and current accounting records in Reckon One and any approved successor platform.
• Lead monthly bank, balance-sheet and control-account reconciliations and resolve unusual or unsupported items.
• Maintain the general ledger and prepare journals, accruals, prepayments and adjustments as required.
• Lead the monthly close and prepare Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet and supporting management reports.
• Investigate material movements and explain financial issues clearly to the Managing Director.
• Manage accounts payable, supplier reconciliations and approved payment processing.
• Prepare authorised client invoices, maintain accounts receivable and actively follow up overdue accounts.
• Process monthly payroll, leave, deductions and superannuation and maintain reliable employee payroll records.
• Maintain correct GST and tax coding and prepare/review BAS, IAS and other recurring ATO reporting requirements.
• Identify opportunities to remove duplicate entry, automate recurring tasks and improve finance workflows.

About you

• Broad financial-accounting experience covering general ledger, reconciliations, journals and month-end close.
• Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing and debtor management.
• Practical payroll experience, including leave and employer contribution / superannuation obligations.
• Sound understanding of Australian GST and recurring business tax requirements, including BAS and IAS preparation or support.
• Ability to prepare and interpret Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet and management financial reports.
• Strong accounting-system capability and confidence learning, configuring and improving financial software.
• Excellent attention to detail and a disciplined approach to reconciliations, evidence and deadlines.
• Strong written and spoken English and the confidence to explain issues, ask questions and follow matters through.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining responsive communication with an Australian-based team.
• A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a closely related discipline is required.
