What they need

The Southern family of companies is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to own the accounting close and financial statements for entities across the group. This is a hands-on ownership role for a self-directed accountant who can operate independently across multiple companies, resolve issues without being handed a checklist, and produce accurate, well-supported financials the leadership team can rely on. It is an excellent opportunity for a strong accounting professional to take on meaningful ownership and grow with a rapidly expanding, multi-entity organization.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and execute month-end and year-end close for assigned entities, end to end — journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and supporting schedules through completed, review-ready financial statements.
  • Own financial statement preparation for assigned entities, and support close and consolidation for the larger, more complex entities alongside the financial reporting lead.
  • Prepare and review balance sheet account reconciliations across multiple systems and entities, resolving discrepancies rather than escalating them.
  • Handle multi-entity accounting, including intercompany activity and the differences in how each company operates.
  • Apply GAAP and company policy to accruals, revenue recognition, fixed assets, and other technical areas, and document the support behind the positions taken.
  • Analyze financial results, identify variances, and provide meaningful explanations.
  • Prepare audit schedules and respond to internal and external audit requests.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and efficiencies — and bring forward solutions, not just observations.
  • Assist with technical accounting research and special projects.
  • Provide reporting and analytical support to the financial reporting function — pulling and validating data, building schedules, and supporting management reporting.
  • Partner cross-functionally with finance, operations, and other business teams.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, including full-cycle month-end and year-end close.
  • Strong, current understanding of GAAP, with the judgment to apply it independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to own a close and produce financial statements with little direction or oversight.
  • Strong experience with account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
  • Advanced Excel and experience working across ERP/accounting systems.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a bias toward finding and fixing the root cause.
  • An ownership mentality — highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to operate effectively across a complex, multi-company environment.
  • Strong communication skills on financial matters with peers and leadership.

Preferred

  • CPA or CPA-eligible.
  • Multi-entity or multi-location accounting experience.
  • Experience in construction, transportation, or industrial environments.
  • A track record of improving or building accounting processes and controls.

Who Thrives Here

  • Takes full ownership of their work and stands behind the numbers.
  • Solves problems instead of waiting for direction.
  • Operates independently across a complex, multi-company environment.
  • Values accuracy and control over shortcuts.
  • Wants to take on increasing responsibility and grow with the organization.
