What they need

The opportunity

Our client is a newly established Hong Kong-based hedge fund manager focused on US equities. The firm is developing a long-biased, quantamental investment strategy that combines proprietary quantitative models with fundamental, discretionary judgement to identify durable growth companies with sustainable competitive advantages.

This is an opportunity to join the initial investment team and work directly with the Chief Investment Officer at an important stage of the firm's development. The successful candidate will contribute to the fundamental research process, idea generation and portfolio construction, while working closely with quantitative specialists to integrate investment insight into a systematic framework.

The role will suit an experienced buy-side investor seeking meaningful involvement in investment decisions and the opportunity to help shape an emerging investment platform.

Key responsibilities

The successful candidate will conduct detailed fundamental research across US equities and contribute to a collaborative investment process. Responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting fundamental research across multiple US equity sectors, including financial modelling, valuation and industry analysis.
  • Monitoring macroeconomic developments, monetary policy and fiscal policy, and assessing their implications for portfolio positioning and sector allocation.
  • Generating and presenting investment ideas with clear investment theses, valuation frameworks and risk assessments.
  • Contributing to portfolio construction, position sizing and sector allocation on a consensus basis.
  • Providing fundamental input into proprietary factor models and systematic research.
  • Collaborating with the quantitative team to integrate fundamental observations into systematic investment frameworks.
  • Participating as a core member of the investment decision-making process.
  • Conducting management meetings and engaging with relevant market participants.
  • Supporting investor communications and investment due diligence as required.
  • Undertaking responsibilities associated with SFC Type 9 regulated activities, including potential appointment as a Responsible Officer and Manager-in-Charge of a Key Business Line, subject to regulatory eligibility and approval.

Candidate profile

Applicants will typically have at least five years of buy-side investment experience at a reputable investment firm, with approximately eight to fourteen years of total professional experience. Genuine involvement in the investment process is essential, including experience generating and presenting ideas that have been implemented with client capital and some degree of investment discretion or authority.

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in finance, economics, engineering, accounting or a related discipline. Strong academic performance is preferred, and an advanced degree would be advantageous.
  • Eligibility to become an SFC Responsible Officer for Type 9 Asset Management activities. Candidates would ordinarily have at least five years as a licensed representative, including at least four years under Type 9. Overseas candidates may be considered if they meet the underlying experience requirements and can obtain the necessary licensing.
  • Strong skills in financial modelling, valuation, industry research and company analysis.
  • Experience conducting management meetings and communicating investment ideas to senior stakeholders.
  • A data-driven mindset and strong numerical intuition. Quantamental experience or familiarity with tools such as Bloomberg BQL or BQuant would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • The ability to communicate investment ideas clearly in fluent English with Cantonese and/or Mandarin proficiency beneficial.
  • Experience managing or mentoring junior colleagues. Direct management experience is preferred but not essential.
  • A self-starting, collaborative and ownership-oriented approach.
  • A clear commitment to making US equities the principal market focus.

Candidates with earlier sell-side research experience may also be considered where they demonstrate sufficient buy-side depth and genuine participation in investment decision-making. CFA, FRM, CPA, MBA or another relevant graduate qualification would be an advantage.
