Senior Backend Developer/ Defence & Security/ Remote

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable Python backend services, APIs, and data pipelines supporting maritime geospatial and temporal analytics.
• Build production-grade microservices using FastAPI and modern asynchronous programming practices.
• Develop and optimize RESTful APIs, including resource modelling, versioning, documentation, error handling, and pagination.
• Design and implement Domain-Driven Design (DDD) solutions, including bounded contexts, aggregates, repositories, domain services, and event-driven architectures.
• Develop and optimize graph database solutions using Neo4j, including Cypher query optimization and graph data modelling.
• Design, process, and extend geospatial and temporal datasets using appropriate spatial indexing and time-series techniques.
• Integrate backend services with Databricks to support data engineering and machine learning workflows.
• Develop event-driven solutions using message brokers such as Kafka, MQTT, Azure Event Hubs, or similar technologies.
• Design, optimize, and maintain relational databases including PostgreSQL and SQL Server, ensuring efficient schema design, indexing, migrations, and query performance.
• Build and maintain Docker containers and support application deployment in Kubernetes environments.
• Develop automated CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, or equivalent platforms.
• Apply Test-Driven Development (TDD) and implement unit, integration, and automated testing using pytest and related frameworks.
• Ensure high code quality through static analysis, linting, peer code reviews, documentation, and adherence to software engineering best practices.
• Implement secure coding practices, authentication, authorization, and API security mechanisms including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, TLS, CORS, and secrets management.
• Monitor application performance and reliability using structured logging, metrics, tracing, and runtime monitoring tools.
• Participate in architectural design discussions and contribute to technical documentation, including C4 diagrams, UML, and architectural decision records.
• Collaborate closely with architects, data engineers, DevOps engineers, QA specialists, UX designers, and product stakeholders throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Lead technical feature delivery from design through deployment while identifying risks, proposing solutions, mentoring team members, and communicating progress effectively.
• Participate actively in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog refinement, estimation, reviews, and retrospectives.

Candidate Experience

• Min. 3 years of experience as BE developer
• Extensive experience developing backend applications using Python, including asynchronous programming, virtual environments, packaging, and type hints.
• Proven experience developing production applications with FastAPI.
• Strong knowledge of Object-Oriented Programming principles and software design patterns.
• Demonstrated practical experience applying Domain-Driven Design (DDD), including bounded contexts, aggregates, repositories, domain services, ubiquitous language, and event-driven modelling.
• Experience implementing performance optimization techniques including profiling, caching, connection pooling, asynchronous processing, and background task queues.
• Strong experience designing and developing RESTful APIs with OpenAPI/Swagger documentation.
• Experience working with JSON, JSON Schema validation, Pydantic, Marshmallow, or similar serialization frameworks.
• Experience developing event-driven applications using technologies such as Kafka, MQTT, Azure Event Hubs, or similar messaging platforms.
• Strong SQL skills with experience designing and optimizing PostgreSQL and/or SQL Server databases.
• Extensive hands-on experience with Neo4j, graph database design, graph data modelling, and Cypher query optimization.
• Strong experience working with geospatial and temporal data, including spatial indexing, time-series data, and geospatial standards.
• Experience developing Docker containers and working with Kubernetes deployments.
• Good Linux administration and command-line skills, including shell scripting and networking fundamentals.
• Experience applying Test-Driven Development (TDD), unit testing, integration testing, mocking, and code coverage practices.
• Experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, or similar platforms.
• Advanced knowledge of Git, including branching strategies, pull requests, rebasing, and conflict resolution.
• Experience using static code analysis and quality tools such as Ruff, flake8, mypy, or similar.
• Strong understanding of secure software development practices, including OWASP Top 10, secure coding, input validation, and secrets management.
• Experience implementing authentication and authorization using OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, and enterprise identity providers such as Keycloak or Microsoft Entra ID.
• Experience implementing API security controls including TLS, CORS, API key management, and rate limiting.
• Understanding of modern software architecture including microservices, layered architecture, and event-driven systems.
