Senior Backend Developer (PHP / Laravel)

E Technologies, a dynamic technology and media company, is hiring a talented Senior Backend Developer – PHP / Laravel to join our innovative team.

Role Summary

The Senior Backend Developer is responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, and optimising secure, scalable, high-performance backend applications, APIs, and services across company products.

The role includes backend architecture, PHP and Laravel development, RESTful API design, database management, third-party integrations, performance optimisation, security, and production system reliability .

A key requirement is strong technical expertise, exceptional problem-solving skills, and the ability to independently design and implement complex backend solutions while maintaining high standards of code quality, security, scalability, and maintainability.

The successful candidate must demonstrate senior-level Laravel expertise, advanced database and API development skills, strong ownership of backend architecture, and the ability to investigate and resolve complex production issues .

Main Responsibilities

• Design, develop, maintain, and optimise backend applications and APIs using PHP 8+ and Laravel .
• Take ownership of backend development, from technical planning and architecture to implementation, testing, and deployment.
• Design secure, scalable, maintainable, and well-structured backend architectures .
• Develop and maintain RESTful APIs supporting web applications, mobile applications, and third-party integrations.
• Build complex functionality including authentication, authorisation, user management, business workflows, and administrative systems .
• Design and optimise MySQL databases , including relationships, indexes, complex queries, and transactions.
• Develop efficient backend logic using Laravel Eloquent ORM, Query Builder, migrations, and database transactions .
• Implement Laravel queues, jobs, events, listeners, notifications, scheduled tasks, and background processing .
• Develop caching solutions using Redis, Laravel Cache, and appropriate caching strategies .
• Implement secure authentication and authorisation using Laravel Sanctum, policies, gates, and role-based access control .
• Integrate third-party APIs, payment gateways, authentication providers, email services, and external platforms.
• Implement secure file uploads, storage management, and integrations with AWS S3 or S3-compatible storage .
• Ensure proper handling of validation, exceptions, API responses, logging, and error reporting.
• Apply security best practices to prevent SQL injection, XSS, CSRF, insecure access, and common application vulnerabilities .
• Optimise application performance, database queries, memory consumption, and API response times.
• Identify and resolve slow queries, N+1 problems, inefficient processing, and backend performance bottlenecks .
• Implement database transactions, data integrity controls, and reliable concurrent processing.
• Develop and maintain Laravel Filament administration panels , where required.
• Build reliable scheduled processes, asynchronous workflows, and integrations between multiple systems.
• Write clean, maintainable, and reusable code following SOLID principles and modern development practices .
• Write and maintain automated tests for backend functionality, APIs, and business logic.
• Investigate and resolve production defects, unexpected behaviour, and complex backend issues.
• Conduct code reviews and contribute to improving coding standards and backend architecture.
• Collaborate with frontend developers, mobile developers, QA engineers, and product teams .
• Participate in technical planning, architecture decisions, task estimation, and solution design.
• Support application deployments, database migrations, releases, and ongoing production maintenance.
• Mentor junior developers and contribute to improving backend development processes.

Required Skills and Experience

• Minimum 5 years of professional backend development experience , with strong hands-on PHP and Laravel experience.
• Strong professional experience developing and maintaining production-level Laravel applications .
• Advanced knowledge of PHP 8+, OOP, interfaces, traits, namespaces, and modern PHP practices .
• Strong understanding of Laravel architecture, service containers, dependency injection, service providers, middleware, and application lifecycle .
• Extensive experience with Laravel Eloquent ORM, Query Builder, migrations, relationships, and transactions .
• Strong experience designing and developing RESTful APIs for web and mobile applications.
• Excellent understanding of API architecture, HTTP methods, status codes, JSON, validation, authentication, and error handling .
• Advanced experience with MySQL , including:
• Database design and relationships
• Query optimisation and indexing
• Complex SQL queries and joins
• Transactions and data integrity
• Query execution analysis
• Strong experience implementing authentication, authorisation, permissions, and role-based access control .
• Experience with Laravel Sanctum, policies, gates , or similar solutions.
• Strong experience with Laravel queues, jobs, events, listeners, scheduled tasks, and background processing .
• Experience using Redis for caching, queues, and application performance optimisation .
• Strong understanding of SOLID principles, design patterns, clean architecture, and maintainable code structures .
• Experience integrating third-party APIs, external services, and payment gateways .
• Strong understanding of web application security, OWASP principles, secure API development, and data protection .
• Experience implementing exception handling, logging, monitoring, and debugging.
• Strong experience with Git, branching strategies, pull requests, and collaborative development workflows .
• Experience writing automated tests using PHPUnit, Pest , or similar frameworks.
• Experience with Composer, dependency management, and Laravel package integration .
• Good understanding of Linux, Apache/Nginx, PHP-FPM, and backend deployment processes .
• Experience with Supervisor, cron jobs, queue workers, and background process management .
• Ability to identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, database issues, and production errors.
• Ability to translate complex business requirements into reliable backend solutions.
• Strong debugging, troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience maintaining and improving existing production applications and large codebases.
• Ability to independently review code, identify technical weaknesses, and recommend architectural improvements.
• Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and deliver high-quality solutions within deadlines.

All candidates MUST include at least TWO (2) complete backend applications, API platforms, or Laravel-based systems they have personally developed or significantly contributed to in their submitted CV or portfolio.

Confidential projects may be described without sharing proprietary source code, provided the candidate clearly explains their technical contributions.

Examples must demonstrate complete, functional, production-level backend systems , not only tutorials, demonstration projects, or basic CRUD applications.
