What they need

Senior Backend Engineer — Java / Spring Boot APIs

Who You Are

You are a backend engineer who lives in Java and Spring Boot. You would rather design a clean API contract and a tight query than touch a stylesheet, and you have shipped and maintained REST APIs that paying customers depend on every day.

You know what it takes to keep a large, mature codebase healthy: clear service boundaries, strong typing, tests that catch regressions, and the discipline to refactor without breaking what already works. You are comfortable in a multi-tenant SaaS environment where one API talks to several relational databases, and you treat tenant isolation, security, and correctness as part of the job rather than someone else's concern.

You can read TypeScript well enough to understand how the front end consumes your endpoints, trace a bug across the boundary, and make a small fix on the other side when that is the fastest way to unblock a release. You are not a front-end developer and do not want to be one. You hold your opinions loosely: you are open to new tools, new approaches, and feedback in review, and you change your mind when the evidence says to.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain RESTful APIs in Java / Spring Boot that power a multi-tenant SaaS platform: endpoints, validation, pagination/sorting/filtering, reporting and dashboard data, audit trails.
  • Own the data layer end to end: JPA entities, DAOs and repositories, native queries, views, and stored procedures across MySQL, SQL Server, and PostgreSQL. Design schemas and tune slow queries.
  • Harden tenant isolation, authentication, and authorization so every request sees only the data it is entitled to.
  • Refactor and decompose large legacy services into well-bounded, testable components without disrupting production.
  • Write unit and integration tests, and raise the bar on coverage, structured logging, and error handling.
  • Define and document API contracts (OpenAPI/Swagger) and work with front-end engineers (TypeScript) to keep them in sync.
  • Give and receive thorough code reviews, and use AI coding assistants as part of the daily workflow while reviewing their output with the same rigor as any other contributor's.
  • Ship through a Bitbucket pull-request and Jira ticket workflow to AWS (ECS), and help resolve production issues.

What You Need to Succeed

  • 5+ years of professional backend development in Java, with deep hands-on Spring Boot experience (Spring MVC, Spring Data JPA, Spring Security).
  • A track record of designing and building RESTful APIs for business applications: contracts, versioning, validation, pagination, error semantics.
  • Strong relational database skills: schema design, JPA/Hibernate mappings, native SQL, query optimization. Hands-on with more than one of MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL.
  • Working knowledge of TypeScript: enough to read a front-end codebase, debug API consumption, and make small changes.
  • Experience working in and improving large, mature codebases: breaking up oversized services, adding tests, untangling dependencies.
  • Solid grasp of API security: authentication and authorization, multi-tenancy, input validation, secrets handling.
  • Experience with a disciplined SDLC and rigorous code review, including AI-assisted development (AI SDLC): using coding assistants productively, verifying what they produce, and staying accountable for everything that ships under your name.
  • Open-minded and coachable: you weigh new approaches on their merits and take review feedback without ego.
  • Maven, Git with a PR-based workflow, structured logging (slf4j), Lombok.
  • Professional English proficiency at CEFR C1 or C2 (or an equivalent score on IELTS, TOEFL, or Cambridge), with clear written communication in PR descriptions, API docs, and technical discussions.

Nice-to-Have

  • AWS experience (ECS, RDS, Secrets Manager).
  • Node.js / TypeScript backend or tooling experience.
  • Experience upgrading Spring Boot or Java versions on a live application.
  • Exposure to caching, messaging, or event-driven processing (Redis, SQS, RabbitMQ).
  • Familiarity with OpenTelemetry or similar observability tooling.
  • Experience integrating third-party APIs or working with connected-device data.
