We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join a venture-backed technology company developing AI-powered automation for the healthcare sector. Its platform helps organizations replace fragmented, manual processes with intelligent systems capable of navigating software applications, processing information and completing operational workflows.

This is a senior, hands-on position focused on the backend services and platform capabilities supporting these AI systems in production. You’ll work across distributed systems, workflow orchestration, automation, evaluation and observability within a TypeScript and Node.js environment.

You’ll join a small and highly technical engineering team where you’ll have significant ownership of projects from initial design through to production. The company is growing quickly, and you’ll help shape its technical architecture and engineering standards as the platform expands.

What you’ll be doing:

• Build and maintain production backend services using TypeScript and Node.js
• Design APIs, domain services, background jobs and event-driven systems
• Develop reliable workflows incorporating state management, retries and recovery
• Build platform capabilities that support AI-driven automation across external systems
• Create tools for measuring performance, investigating failures and monitoring production behavior
• Improve the reliability and scalability of complex automated workflows
• Design reusable technical components that can be applied across different customer environments
• Work closely with customer-facing engineers to identify recurring problems and turn them into scalable product capabilities
• Contribute to architectural decisions and engineering standards
• Own technical projects throughout their full development lifecycle

What we’re looking for:

• At least four years of commercial software engineering experience focused on backend systems or software infrastructure
• Strong experience building production applications with TypeScript and Node.js
• Experience designing reliable, scalable backend services or platforms
• Strong knowledge of APIs, relational databases and ORM frameworks
• Experience with PostgreSQL or a comparable relational database
• An understanding of distributed systems, background processing, workflow orchestration or event-driven architecture
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code or Codex
• Previous experience within a high-growth technology business, technically demanding engineering environment or early-stage startup
• The ability to take ownership of complex and sometimes ambiguous technical challenges
• Strong communication skills and a pragmatic, product-focused approach

Experience building AI-powered products, autonomous systems or browser-based automation would be particularly valuable. Exposure to workflow orchestration tools, automated testing frameworks, cloud infrastructure, document processing, retrieval systems or regulated industries would also be advantageous.

This role is best suited to a backend engineer who enjoys solving complex systems problems and wants significant technical ownership within an ambitious, early-stage technology company.

They are offering a base salary of $150,000–$230,000 plus equity. The position is based onsite in New York City five days per week, and the company is open to eligible visa transfers, including H-1B transfers.
