Senior Backend-focused Symfony Developer

Scalable Path is looking for a Senior Backend-focused Symfony Developer to join the team. This is a remote, full-time (40 hours/week) position.

The client is a well-established hospitality and resort management company, recently becoming the 4th largest operator in its industry in the US. They are transforming how families and travelers vacation, and how great technology supports that mission.

Overview:

A client of Scalable Path's is building a modern vacation platform supporting advanced search, multi-currency reservations, billing, inventory, and more. You'll design and deliver high-performance systems in PHP and Symfony , work closely with product and design partners, and help shape how their our team builds software effectively with AI. This position is predominantly backend focused, but the ideal candidate should be able to help out the frontend team, also.

Responsibilities:

Build & Architect Complex Systems:

• Design and build scalable, maintainable applications using PHP and Symfony

• Model complex business domains using Domain-Driven Design principles, keeping business logic clear, well-bounded, and adaptable

• Contribute to architectural decisions and engineering standards across the platform

• Champion code quality through reviews, testing, and documentation

Search, Data & Performance

• Build and tune search experiences that help members find and book the right stay

• Design efficient PostgreSQL schemas and queries, and optimize for performance at scale

• Implement effective caching strategies to keep the platform fast and reliable

• Proactively identify and resolve bugs, bottlenecks, and inefficiencies

APIs & Integrations

• Design and implement secure, high-performing APIs

• Build and maintain complex integrations with third-party providers, internal services, and external data sources

• Deliver end-to-end features across backend and frontend

AI-Assisted Development

• Use AI tools to accelerate development while staying accountable for correctness, security, and maintainability of everything that ships

• Help the team establish effective practices for building software with AI, including review, verification, and guardrails

Collaboration

• Partner with Product, Design, QA, DevOps, and Security to deliver scalable, reliable features

• Participate in sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives

• Share knowledge through code reviews, documentation, and technical discussions

The client uses Slack, GitHub, and other tools for collaboration.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience

• 5+ years of professional PHP development experience

• Advanced, hands-on experience with the Symfony Framework

• Advanced experience with PostgreSQL , including query optimization and schema design

• Proven experience building or working with search systems (e.g., Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or similar)

• Deep experience with caching strategies (e.g., Redis, HTTP caching, application-level caching)

• Track record of designing and delivering complex API integrations

• Hands-on experience developing software with AI tools, and a clear understanding of their capabilities and limitations

• Solid understanding of object-oriented programming, design patterns, and service-oriented architecture

• Working experience with modern frontend development (React/Next.js, TypeScript)

• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Git, and Docker

• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, evolving environment

Nice to Have:

• Practical experience applying Domain-Driven Design (bounded contexts, aggregates, ubiquitous language), and familiarity with hexagonal architecture

• Cloud experience, AWS preferred

• Experience in hospitality, travel, eCommerce, or marketplace platforms

Relationships - who you'll be working with:

You will be collaborating with an existing team of developers, designers, QA engineers and product managers spread across the western US and the Americas. The client is in the America/Los Angeles (-07:00) PDT time zone.

Expected contract duration:

The client is looking for a 6-month engagement with the potential to continue longer if things go well.

Preferred regions:

The client's preference is for candidates to be located in Latin America, Canada, Europe or United States.
