Senior BI Developer (Power BI / Data & Analytics)

• Reports into: Business Intelligence Manager
• Initial End Date: 30/06/2027 (possibly to be extended)
• Maximum Rate: $881.05 per day, including super ($888.88 plus GST if an ABN)
• Location: Hybrid work option is available whereby the candidate will be required to be in the office (Sydney Olympic Park) for 3 days per week (must be able/willing to commit to this); 2 days WFH; with some occasional days in Parramatta.
• Restrictions: You must either be an Australian Citizen; Permanent resident of Australia; or New Zealand citizen with a current New Zealand Passport, and must not have lived outside of Australia for 12 months or more in the last 5 years.
• Existing Baseline Vetting, or NV1 or 2 clearances, is beneficial, as it speeds up the vetting process, but is not essential.

Project: “Chief Data Office”; we are seeking a highly skilled Senior BI Developer to design, develop, and deliver scalable business intelligence solutions that provide actionable insights across the clients organisation. The successful contractor will play a key role in transforming data into meaningful analytics through robust data models, high-performing dashboards, and modern BI practices. Responsibilities include:

1. Design and develop robust, scalable data models using best practices
2. Develop intuitive Power BI dashboards and reports
3. Source and integrate data from multiple systems (e.g. SQL Server, Oracle, cloud platforms, APIs)
4. Collaborate with data engineering and data science teams to ensure reliable and scalable data pipelines
5. Design and implement data security models, including Row-Level Security
6. Manage Power BI environments and deployment pipelines (Dev/Test/Prod)
7. Apply version control (Git) and CI/CD practices for BI assets
8. Maintain proper documentation of models, data flows, and reporting solutions
9. Work closely with business stakeholders to translate requirements into analytical solutions
10. Mentor junior developers and contribute to team capability uplift
11. Drive continuous improvement in BI practices and tooling.

In a nutshell we need a strong BI Developer, not a Reporting Analyst, nor a Data Analyst, nor a Data Engineer; the resume must demonstrate experience working as a BI Developer. The contractor will be building Power BI Reports, Dashboards, and creating analytics etc. The successful candidate needs a strong Software Development background, and have in-depth SQL Development and advanced Power BI experience (including Power BI Embedded Scripting, preferably using Python), and proven experience in applying optimization techniques to improve Power BI reports performance. Lastly, we expect all candidates to have both industry certification(s) and relevant tertiary education, so long as backed by the required hands-on experience.

Required Skills & Experience:

• 10 years+ experience in Software Development, including Reporting Products and Data Related solutions. Proven experience as a Senior BI Developer (Power BI-focused). MUST HAVE strong experience in Power BI, DAX, data modelling, SQL.
• 5 years+ in Power BI, plus SSRS, Power Apps and other Microsoft Reporting Services tools.
• MUST HAVE strong experience in Power BI Embedded Scripting (Java, Python, etc) and events handling techniques. Python preferred.
• Strong experience in applying optimization techniques to improve Power BI reports performance.
• Strong experience in configuring Power BI (on-premises and online) Reporting Server.
• Strong experience in SQL Server Services (SSIS, SSRS etc).
• Strong experience in detailed data analysis, ETL, data cleansing, and data migration of very large datasets.
• Extensive Experience in Version Control and Code Source Safe Repository (GitHub, BitBucket, etc).
• Heterogeneous database experience (MS SQL, Oracle, Dynamics, etc).
• Experience in Data Modelling and Analysis techniques.
• Experience in collaboration and project management Tools such as JIRA, Confluence, SharePoint.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Relevant Industry Certification is advantageous.
