about the role

this role is the financial backbone of the business. it owns day-to-day bookkeeping, the accuracy of the books across exyt and its related entities, and the monthly and quarterly close that the founder and the external accountant rely on. alongside running the books, it keeps the finance playbook and systems tight so they hold without being chased.

this is not a recording role. the person in it checks, questions, and chases down what doesn't add up, rather than logging it as presented. the standard is simple: the books are clean enough that a day-to-day accountant isn't required, every month closes on time, and each quarter reaches review ready to sign off.

what you'll own.

• reconcile bank, stripe and wise daily, and keep every transaction coded correctly
• check invoices and process unearned revenue so income is recognised in the right month
• manage receivables, failed payments and supplier payments
• run payroll and commissions in xero for the onshore and offshore team
• close each month by the 5th across exyt and its related entities, including trusts and the founder’s personal accounts
• prepare the quarterly review pack and bas, and keep records ready for the external accountant
• produce monthly reporting and a weekly finance update, flagging anything that doesn’t add up
• keep the finance playbook, sops and systems tight, and be the team’s first point of contact for finance questions during sydney hours

what good looks like.

• books reconciled daily, zero unresolved discrepancies carried beyond 48 hours
• every invoice checked for deal value, gst and coding, with unearned revenue allocated correctly
• each month closed by the 5th across every entity, with nothing left uncoded or in suspense
• quarterly review pack sent by the 5th after quarter end, reconciled and in the right accounts
• recurring tasks actioned and reports delivered on schedule without prompting
• finance playbook and sops reviewed, tightened and current within the first 90 days

who you are.

you think in numbers as easily as you think in process. you bring structure to ambiguity, own your function end to end, and handle sensitive financial information with discretion. you ask questions when something doesn't look right instead of recording it as presented. you have been in a fast-moving role before where a lot was expected of you and you did not find that stressful. you found it clarifying.

• 3 to 5 years as a bookkeeper, ideally for australian businesses - remote experience preferred
• hands-on experience with australian gst, bas preparation, superannuation and payroll
• proficient in xero, including xero payroll - experience with hubdoc, stripe and wise is a plus
• confident running a month-end close, including journals for accruals, prepayments, depreciation and unearned revenue
• experience keeping books for more than one entity, including trusts
• experience improving and documenting bookkeeping processes, not just following them
• strong written and spoken english and a track record of following through without being followed up
