What they need

For an international banking institution, we are looking for a senior independent consultant specialising in Carbon Footprint, Climate Risk and Financed Emissions.
The assignment aims to support the bank in strengthening its carbon accounting framework, with a particular focus on Scope 3 financed emissions, and in meeting European banking regulatory and prudential expectations relating to climate and ESG risks.
The consultant will notably be expected to :

  • assess the bank’s existing carbon footprint framework, methodologies, data and governance;

  • define the appropriate organisational and operational perimeter for the carbon footprint assessment;

  • review and, where required, calculate Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions;

  • assess the materiality of the different Scope 3 categories applicable to the bank;

  • focus specifically on Scope 3 Category 15 – Investments / Financed Emissions;

  • map the bank’s lending and investment portfolios to the relevant carbon accounting methodologies and asset classes;

  • calculate financed emissions for relevant portfolios, including Corporate lending, Large Corporate exposures, Project Finance, bonds, commercial real estate and other material investments;

  • apply recognised methodologies, notably the GHG Protocol and PCAF – Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials;

  • collect and structure counterparty, exposure, financial and carbon-emission data;

  • calculate absolute financed emissions and relevant carbon-intensity indicators;

  • assess data availability, coverage and quality, including PCAF data-quality scoring;

  • develop documented proxy and estimation methodologies where counterparty carbon data is unavailable;

  • identify the main carbon-intensive sectors, portfolios and counterparties;

  • analyse the main drivers of financed-emission levels and changes over time;

  • define appropriate carbon and climate-related KPIs and KRIs;

  • support the integration of climate metrics into credit risk management, portfolio monitoring, risk appetite, ICAAP and climate risk management;

  • contribute to the enhancement of ESG questionnaires used during credit origination and annual credit reviews;

  • assess the consistency of the carbon footprint methodology with relevant CSSF, EBA and European banking prudential requirements;

  • support the preparation of relevant Pillar 3 ESG disclosures and climate-related regulatory reporting;

  • establish appropriate reconciliations with Finance, Credit Risk and regulatory reporting data;

  • define data governance, controls, data lineage and audit trails;

  • prepare methodological, procedural and regulatory documentation;

  • develop management and senior management reporting dashboards;

  • propose a roadmap to improve carbon-data coverage, reliability and automation;

  • train and transfer knowledge to the bank’s Risk, Credit, Finance, Sustainability and Regulatory Reporting teams.

The consultant must have significant experience in banking, carbon accounting, climate risk and financed emissions, with proven hands-on experience in calculating the carbon footprint of lending or investment portfolios.
Previous experience with PCAF, GHG Protocol, Scope 3 Category 15, Pillar 3 ESG reporting and European banking regulatory requirements is strongly preferred.
A good understanding of banking credit portfolios, Corporate and Project Finance exposures, ESG risk management and prudential reporting is essential.
Experience with data management and quantitative tools such as advanced Excel, SQL, Python and/or Power BI would be highly valued.
The assignment will be performed in an international environment. Professional fluency in English and French is mandatory.
