What they need
Senior Controls Engineer – Motor Control & Advanced Motion Systems
📍 Reading | On-site | Permanent
Take ownership of the control algorithms powering the next generation of high-performance electric propulsion and motion systems.
We're partnering with an ambitious, fast-growing engineering business developing advanced electric motor and control technologies for demanding applications across aerospace, robotics and high-performance systems.
With significant investment in engineering and manufacturing capabilities, the business is moving from prototype development into production and is looking for an experienced Senior Controls Engineer to take technical ownership of its control algorithms.
This is a genuinely hands-on role offering the opportunity to develop proprietary control technology from first principles, rather than simply integrating existing solutions.
The Opportunity
Your initial focus will be developing and optimising Field-Oriented Control (FOC) algorithms for high-performance electric motors, working closely with embedded firmware and electronic hardware engineers.
As the product portfolio evolves, you'll take ownership of increasingly complex control challenges, including servo and motion control, multi-axis systems and advanced stabilisation technologies.
What You'll Be Doing
- Design and develop FOC algorithms for BLDC and PMSM motors.
- Develop motor control strategies including PWM, SVPWM, vector control and sensorless techniques.
- Model physical systems and design control algorithms using MATLAB and Simulink.
- Develop servo and motion control systems, including position, velocity and current loops.
- Work closely with embedded firmware engineers to translate control algorithms into real-time software.
- Develop testing and validation strategies, including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.
- Analyse motor performance, identify system parameters and optimise control performance using real-world test data.
- Contribute to future developments in robotics, stabilisation and multi-axis control systems.
What We're Looking For
We're particularly interested in engineers with:
- Strong practical experience designing and implementing motor control algorithms , particularly FOC.
- Experience with BLDC/PMSM motor control, vector control, PWM and SVPWM.
- Advanced MATLAB and Simulink skills, including model-based design.
- Strong understanding of control theory, system dynamics and modelling from first principles.
- Experience validating control algorithms on physical hardware.
- Understanding of embedded software development, ideally C/C++.
- A degree or postgraduate qualification in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Mechatronics or a related discipline.
Experience with servo control, sensorless algorithms, robotics, aerospace systems or high-performance electric drives would be particularly valuable.
Interested?
If you're an experienced Controls Engineer who enjoys solving complex physical engineering problems and wants genuine ownership of the technology you develop, I'd be keen to speak.
