What they need
Diploma in Engineering, Metallurgy or a related technical field. Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science plus strong relevant operating experience may be considered.
At least 3 years of operating experience in a converter or similar high-temperature process. Furnace operator and tapping experience would be an advantage.
Prepare the converter and field area for each heat
Control hot-metal charging and solid additions
Lead field activities during blowing and mixing
Make heat and grade decisions
Execute tapping, deslagging and converter preparation
Respond to abnormal operating conditions
Coordinate converter-floor and control-room activities
Complete inspections and shift handover
Assist with shutdowns, trials and other operating activities
