About the Opportunity
Our client is seeking a Senior Crane Engineer or Subject Matter Expert with extensive experience in crane design and engineering. The ideal candidate will have worked with cranes in a nuclear environment; however, candidates with strong experience in conventional or similarly regulated industries will also be considered.
This opportunity is open to professionals from mechanical, civil/structural, electrical, instrumentation and controls, or related engineering disciplines. The successful candidate will bring strong knowledge of hoisting, rigging, lifting systems, and crane controls.
Depending on experience and availability, this position may be structured as either a full-time contract or a specialized part-time consulting assignment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide senior-level engineering and subject matter expertise related to crane systems and lifting equipment.
- Support the design, review, modification, and assessment of cranes and associated systems.
- Review engineering designs, drawings, calculations, technical specifications, and supporting documentation.
- Provide technical guidance on hoisting, rigging, lifting operations, and crane controls.
- Assess crane designs for safety, reliability, operability, maintainability, and compliance with applicable requirements.
- Support multidisciplinary engineering teams across mechanical, civil/structural, electrical, and instrumentation and controls activities.
- Identify technical risks and recommend practical engineering solutions.
- Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, and engineering assessments.
- Provide technical input throughout the project lifecycle, including design, procurement, installation, testing, commissioning, and operational support.
- Ensure work is completed in accordance with applicable codes, standards, quality requirements, and nuclear safety expectations.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Electrical, or a related engineering discipline.
- Professional Engineer designation in Ontario is preferred.
- Senior-level engineering experience involving cranes, lifting systems, or heavy material-handling equipment.
- Demonstrated experience in crane design, modification, assessment, or technical review.
- Strong knowledge of hoisting, rigging, and lifting practices.
- Experience with crane electrical, instrumentation, and control systems is an asset.
- Nuclear industry experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience in another highly regulated or safety-critical industry will also be considered.
- Familiarity with applicable crane, structural, mechanical, and electrical codes and standards.
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.
Security Requirements
An active OPG or Bruce Power nuclear security clearance is strongly preferred due to current clearance processing timelines. Candidates without an active clearance may still be considered but should expect the onboarding process to take longer.
