About the role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Metadata Officer to support the development, management and quality assurance of business metadata across a range of important data assets.

In this role, you will lead metadata development for assigned datasets, coordinate and mentor metadata developers, and work closely with business and technical stakeholders to ensure metadata is accurate, consistent, complete and ready for registration.

You will play a key role in strengthening data governance and management practices, supporting data-driven initiatives and improving the accessibility, reliability and usability of organisational data.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate metadata development activities for assigned datasets, including planning workloads, allocating tasks and monitoring progress.
  • Analyse and maintain existing metadata records, data dictionaries, data models, data lineage information and Enterprise Data Warehouse documentation.
  • Develop, review and harmonise metadata definitions, business terminology and data asset descriptions.
  • Apply relevant metadata standards, including ISO/IEC 11179, to ensure consistency, completeness and quality.
  • Identify metadata gaps, duplication, inconsistencies and quality issues, implementing appropriate corrective actions.
  • Engage with business stakeholders, subject matter experts, data stewards, data engineers and analysts to validate metadata.
  • Coordinate metadata registration activities and manage feedback through to resolution.
  • Monitor project progress, risks, issues, metadata coverage and registration status, maintaining accurate reporting and tracking.
  • Provide guidance, coaching and mentoring to metadata developers to uplift capability and maintain quality standards.
  • Contribute to data governance, project planning, risk management and the transition of registered metadata to ongoing stewardship arrangements.

Highly desirable criteria

  • Demonstrated experience implementing the ISO/IEC 11179 standard for metadata registries.
  • Experience leading metadata development, quality assurance or related data management activities.
  • Knowledge of relevant metadata standards and requirements, including ONDC metadata attributes, DCAT and National Archives of Australia requirements.
  • Strong understanding of data governance, metadata management and data quality principles.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring or coaching team members.

Desirable criteria

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience with project coordination and reporting.
  • Experience working with Enterprise Data Warehouses, data dictionaries, data models and data lineage artefacts.
  • Strong research, analytical and information synthesis capabilities.
  • Experience engaging with business and technical stakeholders to validate data definitions and resolve inconsistencies.
  • Ability to quickly develop an understanding of organisational programmes, data assets and business requirements.
  • Experience supporting data-driven initiatives, including AI-related projects.
  • Knowledge of data stewardship, metadata registration and ongoing maintenance practices.

Skills and experience

  • Strong leadership, organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to manage competing workloads and deliver quality outcomes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical information into clear, plain-English documentation.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess risks, resolve issues and make evidence-based decisions.
  • Strong planning and coordination skills, with the ability to align operational activities with broader strategic objectives.
  • Ability to work independently under broad direction while collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience guiding staff development, managing change and supporting teams through evolving priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining accurate, consistent and reliable metadata.
