Senior Data Engineer/Python Developer

About the Role

Apteum's client in Australia is a fast growing, dynamic property tech SaaS platform. We are searching for an experienced Data Engineer to design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines while leading a small team of engineers. This role requires strong hands-on technical expertise combined with leadership capability to drive delivery across multiple workstreams.

You will play a key role in developing robust data infrastructure, mentoring team members, and ensuring best practices in data engineering and deployment.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines using Python
• Manage and optimise PostgreSQL databases, including complex queries
• Deploy and maintain systems using AWS services
• Implement containerised solutions using Docker
• Orchestrate workflows using Airflow
• Lead a small team of engineers (3–5 members)
• Conduct code reviews and mentor junior engineers
• Prioritise tasks and manage multiple concurrent workstreams
• Ensure accountability, ownership, and delivery quality across projects

Core Requirements (Must-Have)

• Minimum 5+ years of professional experience in Data Engineering

• Strong proficiency in Python (primary language for pipelines and tooling)

• Advanced experience with PostgreSQL

  • CTEs
  • Window functions

• Hands-on experience with AWS, including:

  • S3
  • EC2 / ECS
  • RDS
  • Lambda

• Experience with Docker for containerised deployments

• Strong experience using Apache Airflow

• Proven experience designing and maintaining ETL/data pipelines at scale

• Experience leading a small engineering team (3–5 engineers)

• Comfortable conducting code reviews and mentoring

• Strong organisational and prioritisation skills

• Demonstrated ownership, accountability, and proactive mindset

Nice to Have

• Experience with Databricks or Apache Spark
• Experience working with large-scale data processing

Big Plus

• Experience with GIS / spatial / mapping systems
