Senior Database Administrator

Role Overview

The 'Senior Database Administrator' will be responsible for managing, securing, optimising and automating enterprise database platforms across on-premises and cloud environments. The role focuses on database performance, availability, security, backup and recovery, and operational reliability, while supporting modern data platforms through automation, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), CI/CD and DevOps practices.

Key Responsibilities

• Administer, monitor and optimise Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance environments.
• Manage database upgrades, patching, migrations, performance tuning, capacity planning, backups and recovery testing.
• Implement and maintain database security, access controls, encryption, auditing, High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions.
• Support Azure data services, including Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Microsoft Fabric and Azure Storage.
• Develop automation scripts using PowerShell, Azure CLI or similar tools, and manage infrastructure deployments using Terraform.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps YAML, Git and database deployment tools such as Redgate SQL Change Automation.
• Collaborate with Data Engineers, Developers and Architects to support ETL/ELT workloads, data warehouses, lakehouses and enterprise data integrations.
• Implement monitoring, alerting, automated health checks and remediation processes; support incident management and root cause analysis.
• Follow data governance, quality, retention and compliance requirements within controlled production environments.
• Leverage approved AI tools to assist with SQL query optimisation, script generation, troubleshooting and database documentation, validating all outputs before implementation.
• Explore AI-assisted anomaly detection, performance monitoring and automation opportunities while ensuring data confidentiality, security and compliance with organisational AI policies.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300) preferred.
• Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900), Azure Data Fundamentals (DP-900), Microsoft Fabric and Terraform certifications are desirable.
• ITIL Foundation certification is an advantage.

Required Skills & Experience

• 4+ years of experience in database administration, including production support for Microsoft SQL Server.
• Strong knowledge of SQL performance tuning, database design, backup/recovery, HA/DR and database security.
• Hands-on experience with Azure SQL services and hybrid/cloud-based data platforms.
• Practical experience with PowerShell or similar scripting, Terraform, Git and Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines.
• Exposure to Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Microsoft Fabric and data warehouse/lakehouse solutions.
• Understanding of DataOps, data governance, monitoring and observability practices.
• Experience working in Agile teams and regulated, change-controlled environments.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation and stakeholder communication skills.
