We are seeking a Senior Database Engineer to support national transportation research programs, including the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) and Long-Term Bridge Performance (LTBP) programs and other FHWA infrastructure research initiatives. This position is responsible for the design, management, and optimization of large, complex research databases that power the FHWA InfoHighway™ suite of portals. Responsibilities
- Provide technical and administrative support for FHWA infrastructure research databases, including LTPP, LTBP, and related programs.
- Design, develop, and maintain highly technical databases, data warehouses, metadata systems, and data processing pipelines.
- Implement and optimize processes for database performance tuning; backup, recovery, and replication strategies; automated deployment and migration; and data validation and processing workflows.
- Ensure database security, data integrity, and regulatory compliance.
- Support the intake and integration of new datasets into InfoPave, InfoBridge, InfoPTF, and related FHWA portals.
- Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, and developers to enhance analytics, visualization, and data delivery capabilities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science/engineering, data science, information systems, or a closely related field (master’s degree preferred).
- At least 8 years of experience in database design and modeling; data warehousing; database administration and performance tuning; programming and automation; and data validation and processing.
- Proficiency with major relational database systems such as Oracle RDBMS and Microsoft SQL Server.
- Familiarity with cloud-based database platforms.
- Experience supporting research-quality engineering datasets.
- Knowledge of FHWA InfoHighway portals (InfoPave, InfoBridge, InfoMaterials, InfoPTF).
- Experience with modern DevOps or CI/CD approaches for database management.
- Strong scripting/programming skills (e.g., Python, SQL, PL/SQL, T-SQL).
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work across technical disciplines.
