The Role

We’re working with a market-leading specialist engineering business operating across the US power and utilities sector, delivering major transmission and distribution infrastructure projects.

The organisation has an excellent reputation within the industry and provides engineers with the opportunity to work on high-profile, technically challenging OHL projects using industry-leading design technology, including PLS-CADD .

We are looking for an experienced Overhead Line (OHL) Designer / Senior OHL Designer to join our client’s growing engineering team in the United States .

You will be responsible for developing, checking and delivering overhead transmission and distribution line designs, ensuring projects are completed safely, accurately, within budget and to agreed schedules.

Depending on experience, you will either work as part of a wider engineering and design team or take greater ownership of projects, providing technical leadership and supporting the delivery of complex overhead line schemes for utility and infrastructure clients.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce and check overhead transmission and distribution line designs using industry-standard software, including PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE and PLS-TOWER where applicable.
• Produce detailed design drawings, construction packages, structure schedules and technical documentation.
• Carry out design work considering electrical clearances, structural requirements, loading, foundations, terrain, access, constructability, maintenance and environmental constraints.
• Apply relevant US codes, standards and utility requirements , including the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and applicable federal, state and client standards.
• Develop designs in accordance with project specifications, engineering standards, safety requirements and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Interpret survey information, existing drawings, GIS data, technical reports and other project information to develop practical and accurate designs.
• Review and check technical drawings, calculations and design documentation.
• Work closely with Project Managers, Engineers, Surveyors, Construction teams and other technical disciplines to support successful project delivery.
• Identify technical risks, constraints and design issues at an early stage and communicate these effectively.
• Support constructability reviews and provide technical input throughout the project lifecycle.
• Ensure lessons learned from previous projects are incorporated into future designs.
• Monitor design progress against project budgets and schedules.
• Support project handovers by identifying key technical constraints, risks, programme requirements and outstanding design issues.

OHL Designer – Experience Required

Essential

• Proven experience in Overhead Line Design within the US utility, power or infrastructure sector.
• Experience designing transmission and/or distribution lines .
• Experience producing construction drawings, design packages and technical documentation.
• Strong experience using PLS-CADD ; experience with PLS-POLE and/or PLS-TOWER is advantageous.
• Knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and relevant US utility standards.
• Experience working within engineering/project teams and delivering projects to agreed budgets and schedules.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple design deliverables.
• Ability to identify and communicate technical risks and challenges.
• Good understanding of electrical clearances, structural requirements and overhead line design principles.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications

Preferred:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline .
• Relevant US engineering or technical qualification.
• Professional Engineer (P.E.) licence or progress towards P.E. registration would be advantageous.
