Job Title: Senior Electrical Design Engineer – Data Centres

The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join a growing engineering team delivering major data centre and mission-critical projects across Portugal and wider Europe.

This is a senior technical position for an experienced electrical engineer who can take ownership of electrical building services design from initial concept through detailed design, tender and project handover.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team delivering complex, high-value data centre developments, while acting as a key technical point of contact for clients, contractors and other project stakeholders.

The position would suit an engineer with a background in data centres, mission-critical, high-tech, industrial, healthcare or other technically complex environments, with strong electrical design capability and an interest in developing their career within the rapidly expanding European data centre market.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical services design of major data centre projects from concept through to completion and handover.
• Develop electrical design strategies in line with project requirements, client briefs, operational requirements and applicable standards.
• Take responsibility for the technical delivery of electrical design packages, ensuring designs are technically robust, coordinated and buildable.
• Design and specify electrical building services systems for complex mission-critical environments.
• Develop electrical calculations, technical specifications, equipment schedules, drawings and other engineering deliverables.
• Design and coordinate LV and MV electrical distribution systems and associated infrastructure.
• Work on electrical power distribution, standby generation, UPS systems, transformers, switchgear and associated mission-critical infrastructure.
• Coordinate electrical designs with mechanical, CSA, architectural, structural and specialist engineering disciplines.
• Review and coordinate BIM/Revit models and design information to ensure multidisciplinary interfaces are properly resolved.
• Develop electrical layouts, single-line diagrams, schematics, containment strategies and equipment arrangements.
• Prepare and review tender documentation, including technical specifications, drawings, schedules and scope documentation.
• Participate in design reviews, technical workshops and client meetings, providing clear engineering advice and recommendations.
• Work directly with clients to understand project requirements and translate operational requirements into practical electrical engineering solutions.
• Carry out ongoing design quality assurance and quality control, ensuring engineering deliverables meet project and company standards.
• Support technical reviews of electrical installation works and provide engineering input throughout the construction and delivery phases.
• Identify design risks, technical issues and opportunities for optimisation and develop appropriate engineering solutions.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant IEC, EN, CIBSE and applicable Portuguese/local electrical standards and regulations.
• Manage your own project deliverables, programmes and priorities across multiple workstreams.
• Take ownership of electrical engineering packages with a high degree of autonomy.
• Provide technical guidance, mentoring and support to junior and intermediate electrical engineers.
• Review engineering deliverables produced by other team members and provide constructive technical feedback.
• Contribute to the development and improvement of engineering standards, design processes and technical solutions.
• Support the wider business with technical input into proposals, tenders and new project opportunities where required.

Candidate Profile

• 7+ years' experience in electrical building services design.
• Experience working on data centres, high-tech, industrial, healthcare or other technically complex large-scale projects.
• A degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
• Strong knowledge of electrical building services design principles.
• Experience taking projects from concept through detailed design and delivery.
• Strong knowledge of relevant engineering standards, ideally including IEC, EN and applicable Portuguese/local regulations.
• Strong understanding of electrical power distribution and mission-critical infrastructure.
• Experience with MV/LV systems, UPS, generators, transformers and associated power distribution equipment.
• Experience using Revit, AutoCAD and relevant electrical design/calculation software.
• Strong understanding of BIM and multidisciplinary design coordination.
• Experience preparing and reviewing technical specifications and tender packages.
• Ability to communicate effectively with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary design teams.
• Experience leading or coordinating junior/intermediate engineers.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Excellent technical reporting and presentation skills.
• A proactive approach to problem solving and technical design.
• Professional registration/chartership would be advantageous but is not essential.
