What they need

SUMMARY

In this role the candidate will be part of a fast-paced, high-performing team responsible for designing, building, and commissioning MARA's data center facilities and major power infrastructure projects, optimizing the utilization of space, power, and cooling across operational data centers globally.

As a senior member of the Electrical Team, the Senior Electrical Engineer serves as a technical leader and design authority across the full project lifecycle from site due diligence and conceptual basis of design through construction, commissioning, and as-built. The successful candidate brings deep, hands-on data center electrical experience gained as a design engineer, EPC/contractor engineer, or owner/tenant/end-user engineer, and applies that experience to set standards, mentor other engineers, and drive design consistency across MARA's portfolio.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as the electrical design authority for multiple concurrent data center development projects, responsible for the electrical Basis of Design (BOD) and design standards and ensuring consistency across the portfolio.
  • Leads and reviews electrical designs, calculations, and studies including load flow, short-circuit, protective device coordination, arc flash, and grounding studies—from concept through as-built.
  • Prepares conceptual design and major equipment sizing for respective datacenter projects.
  • Directs the design of medium and high-voltage power distribution, UPS, standby generation, switchgear, PDUs/RPPs, busway, and critical power systems with appropriate redundancy topologies (e.g., N+1, 2N).
  • Provides technical electrical direction across engineering, procurement, construction, and operations phases, resolving complex design and field issues as they arise.
  • Manages and coordinates with external engineering consultants, EPC contractors, and vendors, reviewing their deliverables for technical accuracy, code compliance, constructability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Leads technical due diligence for site selection and feasibility, evaluating power availability, utility interconnection, and electrical infrastructure constraints.
  • Performs efficiency reviews and value-engineering of existing, vendor, or consultant designs to optimize capital cost, energy efficiency (PUE), reliability, and schedule.
  • Supports procurement of long-lead electrical equipment and materials—developing technical specifications and bid packages, evaluating vendors, and making sourcing recommendations.
  • Supports installation, testing, and commissioning (Lx levels) of electrical and associated systems, and leads troubleshooting throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams, including contractors, architects, mechanical engineers, commissioning engineers, and construction managers to integrate electrical systems into the overall facility design.
  • Provides technical guidance and mentorship to electrical engineers, project managers, and project staff, and represents the electrical discipline in design reviews and project meetings.
  • Stays current on the latest data center power, cooling, and electrical infrastructure technologies, as well as mining and AI/HPC compute optimizations.
  • Effectively communicates complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, executives, and clients through clear written and verbal deliverables.
  • Travels 20–30% of the time, primarily within the American continent.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or the equivalent in years of experience; Master's degree a plus.
  • Minimum of 10 years of electrical engineering experience, with a strong, explicit focus on AI/HPC data centers or mission-critical facilities.
  • Qualifying experience may be gained as a design/consulting engineer, EPC or contractor engineer, or owner/tenant/end-user engineer.
  • Demonstrated experience responsible for or heavily contributing to a data center electrical Basis of Design (BOD) and to hyperscale and/or colocation operator requirements.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in one or more states preferred.

Technical Knowledge

  • In-depth knowledge of electrical engineering principles, codes, standards, and practices, including IEC, IEEE, NFPA, NEC, UL, and applicable life safety codes.
  • Strong understanding of data center operations, redundant power distribution architectures, and cooling systems.
  • Knowledge of medium- and high-voltage electrical systems, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues.
  • Proficiency with power system analysis and CAD software (e.g., ETAP, SKM Power Tools, EasyPower, AutoCAD/AutoCAD Electrical, Revit) and other relevant engineering tools.
  • Familiarity with commissioning practices and integrated systems testing; NETA awareness is a plus.

Skills & Attributes

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal abilities, with the capacity to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
