What they need
The role
You will own the prototype from early technical validation through a documented engineering handoff.
Your work will cover sensing experiments, embedded hardware, firmware, cellular connectivity, power optimisation, data analysis and prototype documentation. You will work closely with company leadership and external engineering and manufacturing partners.
What you’ll do
- Validate sensing physics using development kits, representative physical samples and real-world test conditions.
- Bring up a Nordic nRF91-series cellular platform from initial configuration through reliable network connectivity.
- Develop embedded firmware using the nRF Connect SDK and Zephyr RTOS.
- Implement sensor acquisition, device state management, telemetry, fault handling and low-power operating modes.
- Integrate sensors, analogue front ends, cellular connectivity, temperature compensation and power-management components.
- Bring up LTE-M or NB-IoT connectivity, including modem configuration, SIM provisioning, network registration and data transmission.
- Design and run structured laboratory and field experiments.
- Define test procedures, acceptance criteria and repeatable measurement methods.
- Capture clean, traceable data and maintain organised experiment records.
- Use Python or MATLAB to analyse sensor signals, compare test conditions and document findings.
- Measure and optimise sleep, idle, sensing and transmission current.
- Debug firmware and hardware using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, debuggers and power-measurement tools.
- Maintain firmware, test scripts, schematics, configuration files and documentation under version control.
- Identify technical risks early and recommend practical mitigation steps.
- Support component selection, schematic review, prototype integration and design-for-manufacturing preparation.
- Produce a formal go, redesign or stop recommendation supported by test evidence.
- Deliver a complete technical handoff covering firmware, hardware decisions, test results, known limitations and recommended next steps.
What we’re looking for
- Strong hands-on experience developing embedded firmware in C or C++.
- Practical experience with Nordic nRF91-series devices, nRF Connect SDK or Zephyr RTOS.
- Experience bringing up LTE-M, NB-IoT or another cellular IoT platform from scratch.
- Evidence that you have personally built a battery-powered connected device or technically substantial prototype.
- Experience integrating digital and analogue sensors with embedded systems.
- Comfort working with analogue sensor front ends, signal conditioning and noisy real-world measurements.
- Experience measuring and optimising low-power embedded systems.
- Ability to read schematics, review component datasheets and debug prototype electronics.
- Experience using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, multimeters, debuggers and power profilers.
- Python or MATLAB experience for signal analysis, experiment automation or technical documentation.
- Ability to design controlled experiments and communicate what the resulting data does—and does not—prove.
- Strong documentation, version-control and technical-handoff habits.
- Ability to work independently, make evidence-based decisions and take end-to-end ownership.
- Ability to work regularly from Lagos for hands-on development and testing.
A relevant engineering degree is helpful, but demonstrable ability and strong project evidence are more important.
Particularly valuable experience
The following would be advantageous but is not required:
- Commercial or field-deployed cellular IoT products.
- Nordic nRF9160, nRF9151 or related nRF91-series hardware.
- eSIM or cellular IoT SIM provisioning.
- OTA firmware updates and device telemetry.
- Sensor signal processing, acoustic, vibration or other non-invasive sensing systems.
- Custom PCB bring-up and hardware debugging.
- Battery-life modelling and power-budget development.
- Environmental, attachment or repeatability testing.
- Design-for-manufacturing and engineering handoff to external manufacturers.
- Working with remote engineering or manufacturing partners across different time zones.
