What they need

Senior Engineer

Riggins Company has an immediate need for an experienced Senior Engineer to join our engineering team in Hampton, Virginia.

Riggins is an engineering and manufacturing company that specializes in the design and fabrication of engineered structures, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and other specialized equipment. Our work often involves challenging applications where sound engineering judgment, practical design experience, and close coordination between engineering and fabrication are essential. We are looking for an engineer who enjoys solving difficult problems and wants the opportunity to develop into a key technical leader within the company.

The Opportunity

This is a hands-on engineering position with the opportunity to work on a wide variety of challenging and often unique projects. You will be involved in projects from the initial engineering concept through design, analysis, fabrication, testing, and final delivery.

The successful candidate will work closely with experienced engineers, designers, project managers, fabrication personnel, and customers. You will have the opportunity to expand your expertise across several areas of engineering rather than becoming limited to a single specialty.

As your experience and capabilities grow, you will assume increasing responsibility for engineering decisions, technical oversight, mentoring, and the development of Riggins' engineering practices.

This is intended to be a long-term opportunity for an engineer who wants to grow into a significant technical leadership role within the company.

Your Role and Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Performing structural analyses and engineering calculations for complex engineered structures, equipment, and components.
  • Applying sound engineering fundamentals and developing expertise in both classical engineering analysis methods and finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Developing expertise in the design and analysis of ASME Code pressure vessels and heat exchangers.
  • Developing a deep understanding of welded structures and fabrication practices.
  • Working closely with designers to develop practical, manufacturable designs that satisfy engineering, customer, fabrication, and code requirements.
  • Taking ownership of engineering problems from initial concept through design, analysis, fabrication, testing, and final resolution.
  • Reviewing engineering calculations, drawings, and design packages for technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable codes, standards, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Applying sound engineering judgment to challenging and unusual problems where standard solutions may not readily apply.
  • Working closely with project managers, designers, fabrication personnel, customers, and other engineers throughout the design and fabrication process.
  • Participating in technical discussions, design reviews, and problem-solving meetings with customers and outside organizations.
  • Investigating and resolving engineering issues that arise during design, fabrication, testing, or service.
  • Providing technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and designers as your experience and responsibilities grow.
  • Helping develop and improve Riggins' engineering standards, calculation methods, design practices, and technical procedures.
  • Developing a broad understanding of the relationship between engineering analysis, design, fabrication, testing, and the practical performance of engineered equipment.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for an engineer with strong fundamentals who can combine technical analysis with practical engineering judgment.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Significant professional engineering experience involving structural design and analysis..
  • Experience in welded structures and engineered equipment and structures.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering mechanics, strength of materials, and structural analysis.
  • Experience with engineering calculations and technical documentation.
  • Experience with and an interest in developing expertise in finite element analysis software FEMAP/NASTRAN.
  • The ability to read and understand engineering drawings and work effectively with designers.
  • An understanding of welding, fabrication methods, and the practical considerations involved in manufacturing engineered equipment.
  • The ability to interpret and apply engineering codes, standards, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to apply engineering judgment when dealing with unfamiliar or unusual problems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently while also working effectively with engineers, designers, project managers, customers, and fabrication personnel.
  • A willingness to learn, teach, and take on increasing responsibility.
  • Experience with ASME Section VIII, ASME B31 codes, AWS welding standards, pressure vessel design, heat exchanger design, or structural FEA is highly desirable.

More Than a Design Position

At Riggins, engineering does not end when the calculation is complete or the drawing is released.

Our engineers work closely with the people who build the equipment. You will have the opportunity to see your designs fabricated, tested, and put into service—and to learn from what happens along the way.

You will be expected to understand not only whether a design works on paper, but whether it can be fabricated, inspected, tested, and used successfully in the real world.

This practical connection between engineering and fabrication is an important part of the experience you will gain at Riggins.

A Path Toward Technical Leadership

We are looking for someone who wants to build a career with Riggins.

As you demonstrate your technical ability and gain familiarity with our products, customers, engineering practices, and fabrication capabilities, you will be given increasing responsibility.

Over time, you will have the opportunity to become a trusted technical resource for the company, providing engineering guidance, reviewing the work of others, mentoring engineers and designers, solving difficult technical problems, and helping establish the engineering practices and standards used throughout Riggins.

For the right individual, this position provides an opportunity to grow from an experienced engineer into a key technical leader within the organization.

Why Riggins?

Riggins offers an opportunity to work on engineering projects that are often too specialized, too challenging, or too unusual for a typical engineering position.

You will encounter problems that require more than simply applying a standard calculation. You will be encouraged to understand the problem, investigate possible solutions, apply sound engineering principles, and use your judgment to develop a practical answer.

You will also work alongside experienced engineers, designers, and fabricators who value quality engineering, practical solutions, and doing the job right.

If you are an engineer who enjoys solving difficult problems, learning new things, working with people who build what you design, and taking increasing ownership of your work, we would like to hear from you.

Please email your resume to Karen Hickmott, VP of Human Resources, [email protected]. In the subject line please include “Senior Engineer Position”.
