What they need
A great place to work. With great work to do.
Ours is a meaningful and impactful role, as a kaitiaki (caretaker) of the financial services in Aotearoa. We oversee a market that does right by everyone, ensuring better outcomes for all New Zealanders.
Our role as a kaitiaki is brought to life by our values: Look to the Horizon, Help the Team Work, Make the Calls and Open Hearts, Open Minds.
Te Tūranga | The Role
We're looking for an experienced Senior Forensic Accountant to join our Evidence & Investigations team.
This specialist team conducts forensic investigations into misconduct that presents a risk of harm to New Zealand's financial markets. We collect and manage evidence, support the preparation and presentation of civil and criminal proceedings, and provide investigative expertise across the organisation.
This is a unique opportunity to combine forensic accounting with hands-on investigative work. You'll play a key role in gathering and analysing evidence, interviewing witnesses, leading investigations, and helping build cases from the ground up. The work is complex, varied, and intellectually rewarding, requiring both technical expertise and a natural curiosity to uncover facts and connect the dots.
As a senior member of the team, you'll take ownership of investigations, lead case teams, and work closely with colleagues across Enforcement and the wider FMA to deliver impactful outcomes. You'll have the opportunity to see your work contribute directly to the integrity and confidence of New Zealand's financial markets.
This role can be based in either our Auckland or Wellington office, and we are open to considering part-time work arrangements (e.g. 30+ hours/wk).
He kōrero mōu | About you
You'll be an experienced forensic accounting professional who enjoys getting to the heart of complex matters and isn't afraid to roll up your sleeves and engage in the investigative process.
You will likely bring:
- Significant experience in forensic accounting and financial investigations.
- Experience leading or contributing to complex investigations involving financial misconduct.
- Strong evidence gathering, analysis and documentation skills.
- Experience conducting or supporting investigative interviews.
- A sound understanding of investigative and enforcement practices, ideally within a regulatory, law enforcement, or professional services environment.
- The ability to identify key issues, draw logical conclusions, and communicate findings clearly and persuasively.
- Confidence building credibility with a wide range of stakeholders and influencing at all levels.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex financial matters for non-technical audiences.
- Strong planning, organisation and self-management skills, with the resilience to deliver high-quality work under pressure.
Most importantly, you'll thrive in a collaborative environment. Our work is highly team-based, and success comes from people who communicate openly, support their colleagues, and are willing to do what's needed to get a case across the line.
Why join us?
This is an opportunity to work on investigations that matter.
Our team is pragmatic, focused, and committed to achieving long-term outcomes for New Zealand's financial markets. You'll work on challenging and often high-profile matters, helping uncover the facts, build the story, and contribute to outcomes that can influence the market as a whole.
What sets the FMA apart is the breadth of experience you'll gain. You'll have the opportunity to lead investigations, take ownership of cases, and develop your expertise across both forensic accounting and investigative disciplines while working alongside experienced and highly capable colleagues.
