About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Senior Full-Stack Developer (Mobile & Web / MERN) to join a fast-growing European startup connecting students and flexible workers with local businesses in Belgium.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience building production-grade applications across web and mobile, with the ability to take ownership of major technical systems, contribute to architecture decisions, mentor developers, and work directly with international stakeholders.

You will be responsible for the technical direction of the platform across frontend, backend, APIs, integrations, databases, mobile applications, deployment, and performance — working across MongoDB, Express.js, React.js, Node.js, Nest.js, Next.js, TypeScript, and React Native.

Key ResponsibilitiesArchitecture & Development

• Own and contribute to architecture decisions across Node.js, Nest.js, Express.js, React.js/Next.js, and TypeScript.
• Develop and maintain scalable full-stack web and mobile applications using the MERN stack and related technologies.
• Build clean, reusable, and responsive UI components using React.js.
• Develop efficient frontend logic and integrate frontend applications with backend services.
• Take ownership of features from concept through development, testing, deployment, and production.

APIs, Security & Integrations

• Design, build, and maintain secure, scalable REST APIs.
• Implement authentication, authorization, and data security using JWT, OAuth, RBAC, and related best practices.
• Integrate third-party services and APIs, including payments, notifications, payroll, e-signing, and identity/ID verification.

Databases & Performance

• Design and optimize data models across SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Work with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, and Redis.
• Optimize database queries, indexing, caching, cloud deployments, and overall application performance.
• Troubleshoot and resolve bugs, production issues, and system performance bottlenecks.

Cloud & Delivery

• Lead cloud deployments and scalability initiatives.
• Make informed build-vs-buy decisions.
• Evaluate and implement AI coding tools where they can improve development speed without compromising quality.

Leadership & Collaboration

• Mentor developers through code reviews, technical guidance, pairing, and problem-solving.
• Participate in code reviews and maintain clean coding standards.
• Break down complex technical requirements into clear, achievable development tasks.
• Translate business requirements into technical solutions and communicate technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
• Work closely with designers, product managers, and development teams to deliver high-quality features.
• Establish development standards, best practices, and maintain technical documentation.
• Collaborate effectively with a distributed international team.

Required Qualifications & Experience

• 8+ years (9+ preferred) of professional experience as a Full-Stack Developer.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience with the MERN stack: MongoDB, Express.js, React.js, Node.js.
• Strong experience working with Node.js, preferably Nest.js.
• Strong production experience with React.js and preferably Next.js.
• Excellent knowledge of TypeScript and modern JavaScript (ES6+).
• Strong understanding of asynchronous programming, API lifecycle, and system design.
• Strong backend architecture and server-side development skills.
• Hands-on experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL/MySQL, MongoDB, and Redis, including schema design, indexing, and query optimization.
• Experience with database design, optimization, and query performance.
• 5+ years of React Native experience.
• 5+ years of mobile application development experience across both iOS and Android.
• Experience deploying applications on cloud platforms such as AWS, DigitalOcean, or similar.
• Strong understanding of Git, branching strategies, version control, and clean coding practices.
• Experience leading a team or taking ownership of major technical systems.
• Proven experience mentoring and supporting other developers.
• Strong understanding of application security, scalability, and performance.
• Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.
• Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
• Comfortable working with an English-speaking, distributed international team.
• Ability to work independently and take ownership without constant supervision.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is required.

AI & Modern Development Practices

• Comfortable using AI development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar as part of the daily development workflow.
• Able to evaluate when AI tools should and should not be used.
• Capable of reviewing AI-generated code with the same level of rigor as human-written code.
• Strong focus on code quality, security, maintainability, and performance.
