What they need

Opportunity for Impact

Alloy's engineering team is small, which means you own real surface area from day one. This role is hands-on across the stack: TypeScript services and APIs on the back end, the patient-facing web experience on the front, and the data flows and third-party integrations that hold it together. Our stack moves quickly, and we expect it to keep changing as better options arrive.

The near-term reason we are hiring is a site redesign. It is the largest piece of work in front of the team, and we want someone in the room while it is still being shaped rather than after the decisions are already made. Past that, the work spans signup, intake, checkout, subscription management, and the tools our physicians use.

This is an individual contributor role with significant ownership, and your work reaches patients directly. The right person learns fast, solves problems rather than escalating them, and is comfortable working in an environment that changes quickly.

Key Responsibilities

Building the Product

  • Design, build, and ship features end to end across signup, intake, checkout, subscription management, and the tools our physicians use.
  • Build front-end experiences that hold up under real patient use, not just the happy path.
  • Work directly with design and product on the site redesign, from spec through to what actually ships.

Services, Data, and Integrations

  • Own services in production: APIs, background jobs, and the integrations we depend on.
  • Work on the data layer, from schema design through to the pipelines and reporting that sit downstream.
  • Know the seams. Payments (Stripe), messaging (Braze), the pharmacy integrations, recurrences, and the data pipeline are where the real defects live, and they are yours to understand rather than route around.

AI-Backed Features

  • Build and ship AI-backed product features, including the parts where output is not deterministic and you have to think hard about evaluation and guardrails.
  • Use our agentic coding tooling on real work, and form a view on where it speeds you up and where it produces confident but incorrect code. We want that view shared, not kept to yourself.

Reliability and Release

  • Take part in on-call and incident response for the systems you own.
  • Carry your work through testing, release, and verification in production rather than handing it off at merge.
  • Instrument what you build, so we find out something is broken before a patient or the care team tells us.

Shaping How We Work

  • Get involved early, while changes are still being designed, and push back when the shape is wrong.
  • Bring new tooling and approaches to the team, and make the case for them. Making the case is part of the job.
  • Review other people's code, and be someone a less experienced engineer can bring a design question to.

What You'll Deliver In Your First 90 Days

We would rather be specific than vague about this, so here is roughly what the first three months look like:

First 30 Days

  • Walk the product as a patient. Signup, intake, checkout, and subscription management, end to end. Then again on mobile. Then again as a returning customer changing a plan. Then look at the physician-facing tools to see what the clinician sees on the other side of that intake.
  • Trace at least one integration handoff through the code, from the UI down to the external call.
  • Get your local environment running and a first PR merged in week one, even if it is small.
  • Sit with the team through one full release cycle, ticket to production, including how QA and release verification work.
  • Use our agentic coding tooling on enough real tickets to have an opinion about it.
  • Meet product, design, and QA, and have at least one conversation with someone on the operations side. They tend to hear about problems first.

By 60 Days

  • Carry a full ticket load independently: design, implementation, tests, review, release, and verification in production.
  • Show up to refinement and raise feasibility and design questions before the work is committed.
  • Own a defined slice of new experience flows. A page, a flow, or a component set that is yours from spec to ship, working directly with design and product.
  • Give us an honest assessment of the codebase. Where the current architecture will fight us, which tech debt is actually costing us, and what to keep versus replace. Recommending that we delete something is a legitimate answer.
  • Take a first pass at the API and data layer. Where is the front end carrying business logic that belongs on the back end, and where are we relying on someone happening to notice that something broke?

By 90 Days

  • Own a technical proposal for a significant part of a new experience flow, backed by your assessment and with an honest read on effort.
  • Make the speed, quality, and scope tradeoff explicit. We cannot max all three. Turn that into a decision we make deliberately: what ships in the first cut, what sits behind a flag, and what waits.
  • Bring outside practice with a case attached. A specific recommendation on how we build, test, or ship, and the reasoning behind it.
  • Be reviewing PRs regularly and operating without any remaining scaffolding.

The short version: by the end of 90 days we want you changing our minds about things, not waiting to be told what to do.

Qualifications

Behavioral Competencies

  • You learn fast and hold your tools loosely. Deep experience in one framework counts for a lot if it made you sharper about tradeoffs.
  • You are comfortable reading and working in code you did not write, including code you would not have written that way.
  • You get involved while decisions are still being made, and you say so when something looks wrong.
  • You communicate clearly with engineers, product, and clinical stakeholders, and you can explain a technical tradeoff to someone who does not write code.
  • You are comfortable at a small company where priorities can shift quickly in response to new business insight.
  • You care about who is on the other side of the screen. A lot of our patients spent years being told nothing was wrong with them.

Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years building and shipping production software.
  • Strong, current TypeScript on both sides of the stack. This is a hard requirement. You should be able to use the type system to make bad states hard to reach, and to leave behind code the next person can maintain.
  • Solid front-end skills in a modern framework, plus real fluency with the browser platform underneath it.
  • Comfortable with relational databases: schema design, query performance, and migrations against live data.
  • Experience owning services in production, including the third-party integrations they depend on.
  • Hands-on use of AI tooling in your day-to-day work. You know where it helps and where it does not.
  • Experience shipping through a real release process, including tests and verification after deploy.

Preferred

  • Healthcare or another regulated environment.
  • Ecommerce, subscription billing, or payments.
  • Performance work on a consumer-facing product where most traffic is mobile.
  • Observability tooling, and the habit of instrumenting what you build.
  • Having been through a significant site or platform redesign before.
