Senior Full-stack Software Engineer

About the role

You will own a product area within a small, high-leverage team as a hands-on technical owner of a major product area. This is not a ticket-delivery role. You will turn ambiguous operational problems into products, make critical architecture choices, write production code, deploy it, and learn from use. You will help buildings operate smarter, more efficiently, and more sustainably by advancing Alto CERO and the Multi-Property Platform so building owners and operations teams can reduce energy waste, improve the efficiency and reliability of HVAC and other building systems, track energy use and carbon emissions against sustainability goals, and make better operational decisions across their portfolio.

Key responsibilities

• Own a product area, not a feature queue. Define the outcome and critical path, ship it, measure whether it works, and keep improving it.
• Set the technical direction. Own important decisions across architecture, data flows, APIs, data models, tenancy, security, scale, and failure handling.
• Build the critical path end to end. Write production Python services and React interfaces, working across real-time data, cloud, edge, and enterprise integrations as needed.
• Work close to the real problem. Collaborate directly with product managers, building engineers, facility operators, delivery teams, and customers.
• Operate what you ship. Own quality, CI/CD, deployment, observability, performance, incidents, recovery, and post-release decisions.
• Increase the team's leverage. Turn field learning into reusable capabilities, improve standards, review architecture and code, and mentor teammates while remaining hands-on.

About you

• Typically 5+ years of relevant software engineering experience, or equivalent evidence of senior-level production ownership.
• System design and backend ownership. Personally led the architecture of a complex production product or platform across APIs, data flows, data models, tenancy, security, scale, and failure modes.
• High-throughput and real-time systems. Designed, scaled, and troubleshot production systems with meaningful volume, latency, or reliability constraints using caching, queues, workers, WebSocket, MQTT, streaming, or time-series data.
• Infrastructure and production operations. Operated software beyond deployment using Docker and Linux, cloud or on-premise environments, CI/CD, monitoring, scheduled workloads, production troubleshooting, incident recovery, and prevention.
• Strong production experience with Python and FastAPI or Django, PostgreSQL data modeling and performance, and React with TypeScript for data-intensive workflows.
• Product judgement and ownership. Turned ambiguous problems into focused scope, made sound product and architecture trade-offs, shipped the critical path, and changed direction when evidence required it.
• Technical communication and leadership. Communicate trade-offs clearly in English, align people without relying on authority, review technical work, mentor teammates, and raise standards while remaining hands-on.
• Preferred: Applied AI and knowledge systems, advanced 3D and spatial frontend engineering, BIM software engineering, smart-building and IoT domains, or forward-deployed product experience.
