What they need

GAF Geospatial GmbH (GAF), an e-GEOS S.p.A. (Telespazio S.p.A./ASI) company, is a globally active provider of cross-platform geoinformation solutions and innovative Earth Observation applications. In addition to receiving and procuring satellite-based earth observation data, GAF holds a leading position in the areas of data processing and geo-consulting due to its 40 years of expertise. With an international and interdisciplinary team of experts, GAF sets standards for geospatial consulting, cloud- and AI-based data analysis, and satellite-based monitoring of the environment and natural resources in Europe and around the globe.

To support current and upcoming projects in the field of geospatial data analysis at our headquarters in Munich, we are looking for a motivated Senior Geospatial Data Scientist with expertise in remote sensing for the processing and analysis of geospatial data.

The results of our work are used by authorities, companies and in science worldwide for further analysis and decision-making. Using our data analysis capabilities, we provide thematic and statistical information at various spatial reference levels locally and globally. Processing large volumes of satellite data with innovative analysis methods in cloud infrastructures has been indispensable for several years and enables, for example, the creation of land cover products on a continental scale as part of the EU‘s Copernicus program.

Your tasks:

  • Developing together with your team members (Data Scientists, Software Developers and DevOps Engineers) highly efficient data analytics workflows for the derivation of spatial data sets in raster and vector format based on satellite data and represent these to stakeholders such as project managers and customers
  • Support your DevOps colleagues deploying code in different cloud environments and monitor/tune the applications for best performance
  • Evaluating and testing new technologies, frameworks or libraries and assessing them in terms of their benefit for the company
  • Contributing your own ideas and suggestions for improvement or new developments

Core Requirements:

  • A master’s degree in Science or Engineering, such as Geoinformatics, Remote Sensing, Computer Science, Data Science or similar
  • 5 years of professional experience developing Deep Learning Models for image segmentation and object detection
  • Extensive experience with Python especially image processing in Python
  • Hands on experience with deep learning libraries such as TensorFlow, Keras and PyTorch
  • Experience with remote sensing and geodata
  • Fluency in spoken and written English (level C1, CEFR)
  • Ability to think out of the box and work solution orientated in a cross functional team with a broad variety of technical skills within an open and creative work environment

Good to have:

  • Practical experience integrating and applying Large Language Models (LLMs), Vision-Language Models (VLMs), and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines
  • Hands on experience with software development tools like unit tests, CI/CD pipelines and docker

Our offer:

  • Content-wise diverse, technically demanding and responsible tasks in an international and interdisciplinary environment at one of Europe‘s leading geoinformation companies
  • Comprehensive support in familiarising yourself with your professional role
  • Training and development - because your experience and knowledge count
  • A respectful, friendly and modern project working environment in a multi-national team of committed colleagues and a leadership style based on trust
  • Flexible working hours and the opportunity to work from home within the framework of our regulations
  • Workation: temporary work from abroad depending on individual and legal requirements
  • An attractive location with perfect public transport connections and great options for outdoor and recreational activities in the direct vicinity
  • A range of additional benefits, e.g., public transport contribution (job ticket), company pension scheme (optional), travel health insurance (worldwide), occupational health management and more

Further information:

  • Place of work: Headquarters in Munich
  • Full-time position (40 hours per week), starting at the earliest possible date
  • Initially limited to two years, with a subsequent option for a permanent contract

Please note: Only applicants with a valid work permit for Germany can be considered.
