What they need

Shape the tools that shape better sight

You arrive at our Manufacturing Facility in Houston, TX before sunrise on Tuesday. At 4:00am CST, you scan overnight production data from our four molding suites, then roll up your sleeves. A precision mold needs a quick teardown; another tool calls for polishing to ±0.0002” fit; a hot runner awaits a basic repair. By mid-morning, you’ve verified critical process parameters, recorded measurements, and coached a tech on a complex setup. After lunch, you isolate a stubborn defect for further analysis, adjust an optical gauge, and sign off on documentation to GxP standards. Before you go at 2:30pm, you’ve improved uptime, shared know-how, and kept our patients’ needs in sharp focus.

That’s a day in the life of a Senior Injection Mold Toolmaker at Alcon—part of our Engineering function, the team that elevates quality, processes, products, packaging, and materials to deliver brilliant outcomes worldwide.

What you will tackle

  • Own highly complex work in mold tooling design and plastic injection molding to drive efficiency within defined procedures.
  • Make sound, independent decisions using advanced technical skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Follow GxP rigorously: adhere to SOPs and keep documentation accurate, complete, and audit-ready.
  • Guard quality: ensure strict quality control and meet all regulatory requirements.
  • Complete required training and champion continuous improvement in daily operations.
  • Maintain precision molds in a live production environment.
  • Evaluate and execute repairs/modifications; perform mold preventive maintenance.
  • Collect precise measurements, document results, and generate clear reports.
  • Run toolroom equipment: manual mills, lathes, surface grinders, CNC, and EDM machines.
  • Disassemble, clean, repair, and replace defective parts across complex molding tools.
  • Perform mold/tooling setups and repairs; verify part quality and critical parameters; assess molds and recommend repairs/mods; carry out basic machine and mold maintenance; monitor/verify daily production quantities and efficiencies per SOPs.
  • Evaluate new processes, components, products, and systems against engineering specifications.
  • Test, adjust, and maintain electromechanical, mechanical, optical, pneumatic, hydromechanical, and pressure-type measuring/indicating instruments.
  • Establish methods and procedures from detailed specs, blueprints, drawings, and requirements.
  • Assign work to and oversee other technicians.
  • Isolate problems for deeper analysis.
  • Serve as a key contributor to 7-days-a-week Toolroom support for four molding production suites.
