Location: Oxford

Salary: £50,000–£65,000

Location: Remote, with occasional travel to an Oxford office (up to 5 days per month)

On-call: 1 week in every 6, on a rotational basis

The Opportunity

We’re looking for an experienced Senior IT Server Support Engineer to join a team responsible for delivering, maintaining and supporting large-scale, business-critical IT infrastructure.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically capable and versatile engineer with strong experience across Microsoft environments, virtualisation and enterprise server infrastructure. You’ll play a key role in ensuring systems remain reliable, secure and high-performing across multiple data centres and time zones.

Alongside your technical expertise, you’ll bring strong supplier management and negotiation skills, helping to ensure the effective delivery of IT hardware, software and services.

The role is primarily remote, with occasional visits to the Oxford office required, alongside participation in a shared out-of-hours on-call rota.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, maintain and support large-scale Microsoft-based business systems.
• Manage and maintain reliable server infrastructure across multiple data centres and time zones.
• Administer and support advanced virtualisation environments, including VMware and Hyper-V.
• Troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations.
• Manage relationships with IT suppliers across hardware, software and managed services.
• Negotiate with suppliers to secure effective solutions, service quality and value for money.
• Contribute to the ongoing reliability, performance and resilience of the IT environment.
• Participate in a rotational on-call schedule, providing support for emergency incidents outside standard working hours.

Skills & Experience Required

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate practical experience in the following areas:

• Microsoft infrastructure: Strong experience managing and supporting Microsoft-based server environments.
• Virtualisation: Hands-on experience managing enterprise virtualisation platforms, particularly VMware and/or Hyper-V.
• Server infrastructure: Experience supporting large-scale, business-critical IT systems across multiple locations or data centres.
• Technical troubleshooting: The ability to investigate and resolve complex infrastructure issues independently.
• Supplier management: Experience managing IT suppliers across hardware, software and services.
• Commercial negotiation: Confidence negotiating with suppliers to achieve the right balance of cost, quality and service.
• Reliability and ownership: A proactive approach to maintaining stable systems and responding to critical incidents.
