Senior Java Developer - Profrakt, Cyprus

Profrakt is a Norwegian logistics-tech company that negotiates freight agreements and manages carrier relationships for e-commerce businesses of every size, from new startups to established brands.

We negotiate freight agreements for more than 1,500 online stores and businesses in Norway, and we are now expanding into Sweden. By pooling our customers’ combined volume, we get better prices than they could get alone. Customers deal with one partner and one agreement instead of many, while still getting access to carriers such as Bring, PostNord, Helthjem, Porterbuddy, Instabox and UPS.

We build all our software in-house and see ourselves more as a tech company than a freight company.

This role is part of our team in Cyprus.

About the platform

The Profrakt Portal is our customers’ daily workspace. Through it, businesses book B2C and B2B shipments, from small parcels to pallets and heavy goods, and let the system pick the best carrier for each shipment based on price, speed and service.

They print shipping labels, including cloud printing directly to connected label printers.

They track shipments and search, filter and export their shipment history.

They also create returns, book pickups, manage a customer register, their account and a customizable dashboard, and handle invoicing, shipment inquiries and support requests.

About the role

As the platform grows, we are moving selected backend services from Python to Java/Spring Boot. You’ll play a central part in that migration and make sure customers never notice it happening. You’ll also turn quickly built features into reliable production services and improve the data layer behind pricing, booking, tracking and invoicing.

What you’ll do

• Design, build and maintain scalable backend services and REST APIs using Java 17+ and Spring Boot
• Rewrite selected services from Python to Java, keeping behavior consistent and avoiding disruption during the transition
• Review AI-generated and rapidly prototyped code for correctness, security, performance and maintainability, and turn it into production-grade software
• Design and optimize relational database schemas and queries (PostgreSQL/MySQL), with attention to performance and data integrity
• Improve the existing codebase through refactoring and better test coverage

What we’re looking for

• 5+ years of experience in Java development (Java 17+)
• Strong hands-on experience with Spring Boot (Spring Web, Spring Data JPA, Spring Security)
• Deep knowledge of PostgreSQL and/or MySQL: schema design, indexing, query plans, transactions and migrations (Liquibase)
• Solid understanding of object-oriented programming and design patterns
• Proficiency with Git and GitHub/GitLab
• Hands-on experience with AI coding assistants and a clear understanding of their typical failure modes
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills in English
• You are based in Cyprus and have the right to work here

Nice to have

• Frontend development experience with React
• Experience with distributed systems and message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
• Background in logistics, transport or e-commerce
