What they need

About us:

Lysaght Consultants is a leading surveying, engineering and planning firm based in Mount Maunganui and Hamilton. For 30 years, we've helped shape land development, working across land surveying, civil engineering, planning and project management.

Our team of registered surveyors and civil engineers work collaboratively on projects ranging from cadastral surveys to large-scale subdivisions. We take pride in combining technical expertise with a genuine focus on our people, guiding clients through every stage of their land development journey with professionalism and care.

About the role:

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Land Development Engineer to join our engineering team, based in Hamilton, and play a leading role in its growth.

Our Hamilton office is currently a close-knit team, and is our key strategic growth area. This is an opportunity to help shape and grow an emerging engineering team, while still having the backing, resources and project pipeline of a well-established consultancy.

What we offer:

We have a strong pipeline of work, a loyal client base and projects across a broad range of sectors. You’ll have the autonomy to lead your own work while being supported by experienced professionals across our wider business. We take work-life balance seriously and believe that a healthy body supports a healthy mind. As part of this, among other great benefits, our team members are entitled to two 90-minute lunch breaks each week, giving you time to exercise or get outdoors during the working day.

The role:

You’ll lead land development and civil infrastructure projects from early planning and design through to construction and completion. You’ll work directly with clients, coordinate project teams and provide practical leadership to junior and intermediate engineers and designers.

The work is varied, with projects across private land development, lifestyle villages, council infrastructure and other civil sectors. You’ll have genuine scope to influence how our Hamilton engineering team develops, including its people, client relationships and future workload.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Leading projects and acting as the key point of contact for clients.
  • Delivering civil designs covering stormwater, earthworks, roading and general three waters infrastructure.
  • Managing projects with an eye on the wider commercial, planning, surveying and construction considerations.
  • Preparing and administering contracts and providing construction supervision.
  • Leading, supporting and mentoring junior and intermediate staff.
  • Reviewing designs and maintaining a consistently high standard of technical work.
  • Helping develop new business and build lasting client relationships.
  • Contributing to the growth and direction of the Hamilton team.

About you:

You’ll be an experienced land development engineer who enjoys taking ownership of projects, working closely with clients and helping others develop.

Ideally, you will bring:

  • At least seven years’ experience in land development or a closely related civil engineering role.
  • CPEng accreditation, or well progressed towards it.
  • Proven experience as a client lead and project lead.
  • Strong design capability across stormwater, earthworks, roading and three waters.
  • Experience in contract administration and construction supervision.
  • A track record of managing risk through detailed quality assurance.
  • Experience leading teams and mentoring junior and intermediate staff.
  • Strong working knowledge of 12d, with the ability to guide and mentor other design staff in civil design.
  • A track record of developing new work and maintaining strong client relationships.
  • Sound commercial judgement and an understanding of whole-of-project considerations.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a practical, solutions-focused approach.

Just as importantly, you’ll be approachable, dependable and comfortable working as part of a friendly team. You’ll take pride in doing good work, communicate clearly and be willing to get stuck in when needed.

At Lysaght we back our tribe, own what we do, aim higher and create work we’re proud to put our name to.
