Senior Mainframe Systems Engineer

Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Mainframe Systems Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining and optimizing our mainframe environment, ensuring high availability, performance, and security of critical systems. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in z/OS systems, hardware configurations, and problem resolution, contributing to the seamless operation of our enterprise mainframe infrastructure.

Duties

• Install, configure, maintain, and upgrade z/OS and associated system software using SMP/E, including applying PTFs and managing ISV product maintenance.
• Lead or support hardware refreshes and operating system upgrades, including IODF/HCD management, LPAR configuration, and IPL planning to ensure system stability and efficiency.
• Own complex incident problem determination by performing dump analysis, analyzing SMF/RMF data, and conducting root-cause analysis under production pressure to resolve issues promptly.
• Tune system performance and plan capacity across various workloads such as CICS, DB2, MQ, and batch processing to optimize system throughput and reliability.
• Execute changes in a controlled manner while adhering to operational procedures and best practices to minimize downtime and risk.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience with z/OS system installation, configuration, maintenance, and upgrades.
• Strong knowledge of SMP/E for software maintenance and PTF application processes.
• Proven ability to lead hardware refreshes and OS upgrades involving IODF/HCD management, LPAR configuration, and IPL planning.
• Expertise in problem determination techniques including dump analysis, SMF/RMF data interpretation, and root-cause analysis under high-pressure situations.
• Skilled in performance tuning and capacity planning for mainframe workloads such as CICS, DB2, MQ, and batch environments.
• Excellent troubleshooting skills combined with a proactive approach to system optimization.
• Relevant certifications or training in mainframe systems administration are preferred.
