- Qualification: B. Tech / B.E. in Civil Engineering from a recognized university / institution.
- Preferred: M. Tech / M.E. in Structural Engineering / Bridge Engineering.
- Experience: Min.12 yrs of relevant experience in structural/bridge design, with substantial experience in the design and engineering of Major Bridges and Important Bridges for highway, expressway, railway, or other large-scale infrastructure projects.
The role requires strong technical expertise in bridge structural analysis, design, detailing, design review, constructability, seismic and wind considerations, foundation systems, and construction-stage engineering, along with the ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, design consultants, contractors, and project authorities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Bridge Structural Design
Lead structural design activities for Major Bridges, Important Bridges, Viaducts, Flyovers, ROBs/RUBs, elevated corridors, and complex bridge structures.
Develop and review concept, preliminary, detailed and construction-stage structural designs.
Design and review bridge components including:
Deck slabs and superstructures
PSC/RCC/steel girders
Box girders and segmental bridges
Piers, pier caps and abutments
Foundations, pile foundations and pile caps
Bearings and expansion joints
Retaining and approach structures
Wing walls and return walls
Temporary and construction-stage structures
Evaluate alternative structural systems considering safety, durability, constructability, construction methodology, time and cost optimization.
2. Structural Analysis & Engineering
Review and undertake structural analysis for bridge structures subjected to:
Dead and live loads
Impact and braking forces
Wind loads
Seismic forces
Temperature and shrinkage effects
Creep and shrinkage
Earth pressure
Water/current forces, where applicable
Construction-stage and erection loads
Other project-specific loading conditions
Review structural modelling, load combinations, design parameters, analysis results, and design assumptions.
Conduct/review global and local structural analysis as required for complex bridge structures.
Review serviceability, strength, stability, fatigue, durability, and ultimate limit-state requirements.
3. Major & Important Bridge Design
Demonstrated experience in the design of long-span, high-level, major river bridges and other technically complex bridge structures will be preferred.
Experience with bridges involving deep foundations, difficult geotechnical conditions, high seismic zones, waterways, navigational requirements, or challenging construction conditions will be an advantage.
Review structural concepts for different bridge construction methods such as:
Cast-in-situ construction
Precast/segmental construction
Precast prestressed girders
Incremental launching
Balanced cantilever construction
Span-by-span construction
Steel/composite bridge erection
Coordinate structural design with the proposed construction methodology and erection sequence.
4. Foundation & Substructure Engineering
- Review design of bridge foundations considering geotechnical investigation, soil parameters, scour, seismic effects, settlement, lateral loads, and foundation capacity.
- Review pile, pile-cap, open/well/other foundation systems as applicable to the project.
- Coordinate with geotechnical and hydrology experts for foundation and river-crossing design.
- Review scour protection and foundation safety for bridges across rivers and water bodies.
5. Design Codes & Standards
- Ensure bridge designs comply with applicable Indian Standards, IRC codes, MoRTH specifications, relevant IS codes, project specifications, and authority requirements.
- Working knowledge of applicable international standards such as AASHTO, Eurocodes, BS/EN or other project-specific standards will be an advantage.
- Maintain awareness of revisions and updates to relevant bridge design standards and specifications.
6. Drawings & Detailing
- Review and approve structural drawings, reinforcement detailing, bar bending schedules, fabrication drawings, erection drawings, and construction details.
- Ensure design drawings are clear, coordinated, constructible, and consistent with design calculations.
- Review design deliverables prepared by internal teams and external structural consultants.
7. Design Review & Consultant Management
- Lead technical review of structural designs submitted by design consultants, EPC contractors, and specialist agencies.
- Check structural calculations, design reports, drawings, specifications, and technical submissions.
- Coordinate with consultants for timely resolution of design comments, RFIs, technical queries, and design changes.
- Monitor design deliverables, quality, schedule, and compliance with project requirements.
- Participate in technical/design review meetings with the Client, Authority, Independent Engineer, PMC, contractors, and consultants.
8. Construction Support
- Provide technical support to site teams during bridge construction.
- Resolve structural issues arising during execution and provide technically sound solutions.
- Review proposed construction changes, temporary works, erection schemes, and method statements from a structural perspective.
- Support investigation and resolution of site deviations, structural defects, construction constraints, and unforeseen conditions.
- Ensure that construction activities remain consistent with approved structural designs.
9. Value Engineering & Optimization
- Identify opportunities for structural optimization, material savings, constructability improvement, and reduction in construction time without compromising safety, durability, or performance.
- Evaluate alternative bridge configurations, spans, foundation systems, construction methods, and materials.
- Provide technical inputs for cost optimization and lifecycle considerations.
Software Skills: Strong working knowledge of STAAD. Pro or relevant structural engineering software.
Candidates should preferably have experience in:
