Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to develop cutting-edge robotic and automation solutions for logistics and e-commerce applications. This role sits at the intersection of mechanical engineering, automation, and customer engagement, requiring an engineer who can understand complex customer requirements and translate them into practical, site-specific solutions.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable working directly with customers, traveling to client facilities, collaborating with sales and engineering teams, and taking ownership of mechanical solutions from initial concept through implementation.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop automation solutions that support strategic growth within the logistics and e-commerce industries.
- Lead activities throughout the solution ideation, design, and technical communication process.
- Partner with sales teams to identify, evaluate, and determine the feasibility of potential customer applications.
- Travel to customer sites as needed to conduct site surveys, understand application requirements, and identify technical constraints.
- Serve as the technical bridge between sales, engineering, customers, installers, and integration partners.
- Communicate functional requirements, proposed solutions, and technical specifications to internal and external project teams.
- Support pre-sales activities, including proof-of-concept development, demonstrations, technical presentations, and customer Q&A.
- Provide mechanical expertise during customer-facing meetings and identify potential installation or integration challenges.
- Specify appropriate equipment, accessories, and supporting components based on application requirements.
- Conduct site surveys and collect technical information required to develop complete system configurations for operational handoff.
- Develop site-specific mechanical fitment designs and custom solutions to address installation or integration challenges.
- Work directly with installers and integrators to communicate mechanical requirements using CAD models and technical documentation.
- Review conveyor dimensions, infeed/outfeed configurations, reject paths, fencing, upstream/downstream interfaces, and other system-level considerations.
- Import and review integrator CAD files to verify fitment, identify design conflicts, and uncover potential implementation challenges.
- Create custom mechanical designs to bridge gaps between standard products and customer-specific requirements.
- Develop and 3D print prototype designs as needed.
- Clarify and update technical documentation provided to installers and integration partners.
- Evaluate existing automation solutions and collaborate with technical teams to identify opportunities for product improvements based on customer feedback.
- Research emerging automation technologies and recommend technologies that could improve future solutions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or 5+ years of relevant professional experience.
- Strong experience with SolidWorks and PDM.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Visual Components, CAD importation, and CAD manipulation.
- Experience developing system architectures for automated equipment, preferably within logistics, supply chain, or material-handling environments.
- Strong mechanical design and problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers, sales teams, engineers, installers, and integration partners.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with one or more of the following is preferred:
- Business development or customer relationship management.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and system-level schematics and diagrams.
- System cost estimation and resource planning.
- Equipment setup, configuration, and commissioning.
- Industrial robotics, robotic peripherals, and machine safety systems.
- Professional certifications such as PE, PMP, Six Sigma, or Agile.
