Senior Mobile App Automation Engineer (Appium, API & Playwright)

About the Role

Our client, a technology-driven organisation specialising in software development and digital solutions, is looking for a Senior Mobile App Automation Engineer to join their engineering team.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in mobile test automation across iOS and Android platforms, API testing, and web automation. This role requires expertise in building scalable automation frameworks, integrating AI-assisted testing tools, and ensuring the quality, reliability, and performance of complex, real-time applications.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks for native and hybrid mobile applications across iOS and Android using Appium.
• Leverage AI-assisted testing tools and Model Context Protocol (MCP) technologies to improve test creation, element inspection, and test maintenance.
• Build scalable automation frameworks that support parallel execution across real devices, emulators, and simulators.
• Automate complex, real-time application workflows, including user onboarding, location-based services, multi-user interactions, payments, cancellations, and notifications.
• Develop and maintain API automation suites using RestAssured, covering authentication, request validation, negative testing, and API contract verification.
• Create and maintain web automation scripts using Playwright for web applications and administrative platforms.
• Integrate mobile, API, and web automation suites into CI/CD pipelines and cloud-based device testing platforms.
• Implement effective test data management, mocking, and service virtualisation strategies for third-party integrations.
• Analyse test results, investigate failures, identify flaky tests, and report defects with supporting logs, videos, and device traces.
• Develop and maintain BDD-based test scenarios using frameworks such as Cucumber or Gauge.
• Collaborate with developers and product teams to define acceptance criteria, improve testability, and support early defect detection.
• Monitor application stability and performance, including crash rates, response times, memory usage, and network consumption.
• Mentor QA engineers and promote best practices in automation framework design and the responsible use of AI-assisted testing tools.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• At least 5 years of experience in software test automation, including a minimum of 3 years in mobile test automation.
• Strong hands-on experience with Appium for automating native and hybrid applications on both iOS and Android.
• Practical experience with Appium MCP and AI-assisted test authoring, element inspection, and test maintenance.
• Proven experience in API automation using RestAssured, along with TestNG or JUnit and Maven or Gradle.
• Experience developing and maintaining web automation scripts using Playwright, including AI-assisted automation capabilities.
• Experience testing complex, real-time consumer applications involving location-based services, multiple user roles, and payment workflows.
• Strong programming skills in Java and/or TypeScript, with experience using Git and CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI.
• Knowledge of BDD frameworks such as Cucumber or Gauge and the ability to develop clear, reusable test scenarios.
• Experience running automated tests in parallel using cloud-based device testing platforms such as BrowserStack, Sauce Labs, or AWS Device Farm.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills.

Additional Advantages

• ISTQB Foundation certification or a recognised mobile testing qualification.
• Experience developing custom Appium plugins, drivers, or automation framework extensions.
• Familiarity with mobile performance monitoring and crash analytics tools such as Firebase Crashlytics, Datadog, or New Relic.
• Experience with Docker, AWS, and containerised test execution.
• Knowledge of mobile accessibility testing using VoiceOver and TalkBack.
• Understanding of data privacy, payment security, and PCI-DSS requirements in testing environments.
