Senior Network Engineer

About the Role

Crossfield Technologies is hiring a Senior Network Engineer to design, install, and maintain reliable networks for small and mid-sized business clients in the Austin area.

You will take ownership of network design and implementation, resolve complex technical issues escalated by the help desk, and support junior engineers as they develop their skills. The role involves both remote troubleshooting and on-site client work, so you should be comfortable managing technical problems independently and explaining your decisions clearly.

What You'll Do

• Design network layouts covering routing, switching, VLANs, firewalls, and wireless connectivity.
• Install and configure network equipment at client sites and remotely.
• Investigate outages, connectivity problems, and performance issues escalated by the help desk.
• Review network monitoring alerts and identify issues that need attention before they affect clients.
• Plan and carry out firmware updates and other network changes with appropriate care.
• Maintain accurate technical documentation, configuration records, and network diagrams.
• Explain incidents, their causes, and proposed solutions to clients and colleagues in straightforward language.
• Guide junior engineers through troubleshooting and network configuration tasks.
• Coordinate on-site visits and technical work across client locations in the Austin area.
• Participate in the on-call rotation and respond to assigned support escalations.

What You'll Bring

• At least five years of professional network engineering experience.
• Practical knowledge of routing, switching, and VLAN design.
• Hands-on experience configuring and troubleshooting firewalls and wireless network controllers.
• Experience installing and supporting network infrastructure in business environments.
• The ability to diagnose complex network problems methodically.
• Strong written documentation skills, including the ability to create clear network diagrams.
• A careful approach to configuration changes, updates, and incident resolution.
• The communication skills needed to explain technical issues without unnecessary jargon.
• A willingness to visit client sites around Austin and participate in an on-call rotation.

As a senior member of the engineering team, you will also help junior colleagues develop sound troubleshooting habits and follow consistent technical practices.

Working Schedule

Regular hours: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM
Additional requirement: Participation in an on-call rotation
Work location: Austin, Texas, with on-site client visits as required

Hiring Process

The selection process consists of three stages:

• Phone interview: Discuss your network engineering background, technical experience, and approach to client support.
• Practical troubleshooting exercise: Work through a network issue in a lab environment and explain your diagnostic process.
• Engineering team meeting: Discuss your technical judgement, documentation practices, and approach to working with other engineers.
