Senior Plant Operator

Description This is an unpaid, at-will, volunteer position. Participants in the program will receive a meal allowance for each shift worked. After successful participation in the Firefighter Reserve program for a minimum of twelve 24-hour shifts, candidates may be eligible to compete in a promotional recruitment for full-time Firefighter and Firefighter Paramedic vacancies. Additional requirements will be posted at the time of the recruitment. CLASS DEFINITION A volunteer Firefighter Reserve performs basic duties in the prevention and suppression of fires and assists with Fire Department activities.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This classification is distinguished by its performance of basic duties in order to gain valuable experience within a Fire Department and its unpaid, volunteer status. An incumbent in this classification is prohibited from entering a hazardous environment unless accompanied by a full-time sworn Fire Department member of a higher rank.

Supervision Received The incumbent works under the immediate supervision of the Fire Captain.

Job Overview

• Respond to alarms of fire or other emergencies.
• Lay and connect hoses, direct water streams, raise and climb ladders, and use chemical extinguishers.
• Ventilate burning buildings, remove persons from danger, administer emergency medical care to injured persons, and perform salvage operations.
• Assist in conducting fire prevention inspections, and enforcing fire-related codes and ordinances.
• Maintain Fire Department equipment, furnishings, and structures at all times.
• Assist in the housekeeping and maintenance of the fire station.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualification Guidelines

Education

• High School graduation or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

• Previous firefighting and/or paramedic experience is highly desirable. REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL LEVELS:
• Modern fire suppression, fire prevention, and emergency rescue techniques.
• Principles of fire behavior.
• CPR techniques. REQUISITE ABILITIES:
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, supervisors, City officials, and the general public.
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Deal firmly and courteously with the public.
• React quickly to complex, fast-paced, and emergency situations. LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:
• California State Certified Firefighter I or possession of Certification of Completion within one year prior to appointment from a California State Board of Fire Service Approved Fire Academy, including the seven core fire classes as outlined by Rancho Santiago College Fire Academy, as well as, verification that skills have been maintained through additional classes or service in a fire reserve program.
• Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician I (EMT) Certification.
• Possession of current CPR certification.
• A valid California Class “C” Driver’s License is required. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
• Must be able to work irregular hours or long periods of time without relief, including but not limited to 24 hour shifts, overtime, emergency call back, shift work, holidays, and weekends.
