Senior Platform / DevOps Engineer — Windows Server (Contract)

API Connects is a New Zealand-owned and managed consulting firm headquartered in Auckland. We help organisations with integration, DevOps, cloud, data and AI automation, and full-stack development.

We're looking for a senior engineer for one of our clients, an established Auckland software company.

This is a hands-on build. You'll design and develop a new, standalone deployment tool that takes an instruction file from their existing internal system and executes it reliably against a small Windows Server estate, distributing application files and running database scripts across multiple hosting servers. It needs to be well structured, properly tested, and stable enough that it rarely needs touching, because failed deployments affect their customers directly.

This is a developer role with a platform engineering background, not a configuration or pipeline role. You will be writing the software.

What you'll do

Design and build the deployment tool from the ground up.

Implement the logic that interprets deployment instructions and executes them safely.

Handle file distribution and SQL Server script execution across multiple hosting servers.

Build in proper error handling, logging, verification and rollback.

Write the tests that prove it's reliable.

Work alongside the client's development team and hand over cleanly.

What we're looking for

8+ years' total IT experience.

5+ years in DevOps or platform engineering.

Several years of that as a hands-on developer, building application or middleware logic rather than only automation scripts.

Strong development skills in C#/.NET, Java or Python.

Solid Windows Server experience in production.

SQL Server, including scripted schema and data updates.

Comfortable with self-managed, on-premise infrastructure rather than cloud.

Genuine testing discipline. This role is judged on reliability.

Must have the right to work in New Zealand.

Nice to have

Middleware or integration development background.

Experience releasing software to multiple customer environments.

Deployment or release tooling experience such as Octopus Deploy, Ansible or DSC.

The engagement

Predominantly onsite on Auckland's North Shore. Three-month contract initially, with the possibility of extending a further three months. Rate negotiable based on experience.
