Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Senior PostgreSQL DBA / Database Engineer with 8–10 years of experience in database administration, performance optimization, architecture, and cloud migration. The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience migrating on-premises databases to AWS, particularly upgrading older PostgreSQL versions to newer versions.

The role requires strong expertise in PostgreSQL internals, indexing strategies, query optimization, and managing large-scale production databases. The candidate must be capable of making independent technical decisions to improve performance, scalability, and reliability.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and optimize indexing strategies using B-Tree, GIN, GiST, Hash, BRIN, partial, and expression indexes.
• Perform database migration from on-premises environments to AWS cloud.
• Execute PostgreSQL version upgrades, specifically migrating from older PostgreSQL versions to newer versions.
• Diagnose and resolve query performance issues using EXPLAIN ANALYZE, query planner statistics, and PostgreSQL internals.
• Optimize database performance for large tables, high-write workloads, and production environments handling 100M+ rows.
• Design and review database schemas, data models, partitioning strategies, and migration plans.
• Evaluate trade-offs between read performance, write overhead, storage costs, and index maintenance.
• Manage PostgreSQL maintenance activities, including VACUUM, autovacuum tuning, database bloat management, WAL, and replication.
• Collaborate with backend engineering teams to review SQL queries, schema changes, and database migrations.
• Establish database best practices and mentor team members on PostgreSQL fundamentals and query optimization.

Required Skills and Experience

• 8–10 years of experience in database administration, database engineering, or related roles.
• Strong hands-on experience with PostgreSQL database administration, architecture, and performance tuning.
• Proven experience migrating databases from on-premises environments to AWS.
• Mandatory experience with PostgreSQL migration and version upgrades from older to newer releases.
• Strong understanding of PostgreSQL internals, including MVCC, query planning, indexing, and transaction management.
• Expertise in B-Tree, GIN, and GiST indexes, including selecting appropriate indexes for production workloads.
• Experience troubleshooting performance issues on large-scale databases, preferably tables containing 100M+ rows.
• Strong knowledge of SQL query optimization, schema design, partitioning, and index maintenance.
• Experience with backup and recovery, replication, database monitoring, and high availability.
• Ability to analyze complex performance issues and justify database architecture decisions.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with BRIN indexes for time-series or append-only data.
• Knowledge of JSONB and full-text search indexing.
• Familiarity with PostgreSQL range types, exclusion constraints, and PostGIS.
• Experience tuning WAL, replication, autovacuum, and high-write database workloads.
• Hands-on experience with AWS database services and cloud database migration tools.

Expected Outcomes

Within the first 90 days, the candidate should be able to understand the existing database architecture and indexing strategy, identify and resolve at least one significant production performance issue, and contribute to database schema reviews, indexing improvements, and migration planning.
