What they need

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Procurement Specialist to support a major British Army training transformation programme.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the delivery of a high-profile defence programme, working with industry partners, suppliers and military stakeholders to transform collective training and help ensure the British Army is prepared to meet future operational challenges.

You will operate within a collaborative, matrix-managed environment, taking responsibility for subcontract management activities, building strong supplier relationships and driving operational excellence. The successful candidate will be confident working independently, influencing stakeholders and delivering results in a complex, fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Subcontract Management: Manage moderately sized subcontracts, typically valued between £10 million and £40 million, ensuring alignment with programme objectives and commercial requirements.
  • Contract Negotiation: Lead negotiations relating to contracts, non-disclosure agreements, contractual terms and conditions.
  • Supplier Performance: Build and maintain effective supplier relationships, monitor performance and drive continuous improvement.
  • Project Delivery: Manage subcontracting activities and smaller projects autonomously, ensuring delivery against agreed objectives, timescales and requirements.
  • Commercial Expertise: Apply sound knowledge of subcontracting practices to resolve complex issues and support effective commercial decision-making.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal teams, suppliers, customers and military partners to ensure alignment on policies, processes and contractual obligations.
  • Team Development: Provide guidance and coaching to junior colleagues, promoting best practice and consistency across subcontracting activities.
  • Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve subcontract management processes, systems and ways of working.
  • Operational Excellence: Take ownership of day-to-day commercial objectives, contributing directly to programme performance and successful delivery.

About You

We are looking for a commercially minded professional who takes ownership, enjoys working collaboratively and is motivated by delivering meaningful outcomes within the defence sector.

You will bring a proactive approach to problem-solving, strong commercial awareness and the confidence to make informed decisions with minimal supervision.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • A university degree, preferably in a STEM or business-related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Practical experience in subcontract management, supplier engagement and contract execution.
  • Experience managing subcontracting activities and contributing to commercial and programme planning.
  • Strong negotiation skills and an understanding of contractual terms and conditions.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the confidence to resolve complex commercial issues.
  • Proven stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence across different functions and organisational levels.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring or supporting the development of junior team members.
  • The ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a matrix-managed organisation.
  • A results-driven approach, with a focus on delivery, continuous improvement and operational excellence.
  • Experience working collaboratively with industry partners and, ideally, military stakeholders.

Security Clearance: Candidates must be eligible to obtain UK Security Check (SC) clearance.
