Senior Python Developer (FastAPI & Kafka)

We are seeking a skilled Senior Python Developer with Java experience to join our team on a long-term engagement for a leading client in the energy and critical infrastructure sector. The ideal candidate has solid experience building backend applications with Python , FastAPI and Kafka in a cloud-native environment, and is comfortable working on complex, high-reliability systems.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of a new modular control center platform, including monitoring and power-quality applications. The role covers the design, development, testing and documentation of new and existing software modules, in close collaboration with architects, engineers and other stakeholders.

Engagement details: Full-time, 90% remote with occasional onsite presence in Berlin. Python is approximately 80% of the work and Java approximately 20% .

Responsibilities:

• Design, implement, test and document new software modules according to defined requirements and acceptance criteria.
• Enhance and further develop existing modules and system components.
• Develop Python applications using FastAPI and Kafka-based streaming, and deploy them using Helm charts.
• Develop and maintain Java components using Spring Boot.
• Analyse existing third-party and open-source solutions, and provide documented make-or-buy recommendations including rationale, risks and benefits.
• Prepare contributions to open-source components, including change descriptions, test evidence and publication readiness.
• Produce technical designs that comply with the client's IT strategy and architecture standards.
• Define and validate interfaces, dependencies and compatibility requirements across product lines.
• Assess platform differences and adapt deployments to new infrastructure.
• Evaluate and select additional data tools such as databases and streaming interfaces.
• Prepare clear documentation and decision materials for stakeholder review.
• Work in an agile team and contribute to continuous improvement of tools and processes.

Requirements:

• 5+ years of professional experience developing IT solutions aligned with a client's IT strategy and standards.
• Strong Python development experience (FastAPI, Kafka, Helm Charts) .
• Solid Java development experience (Spring Boot, JDK 21+, Maven) .
• Experience with agile methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban.
• Proven ability to work independently and take ownership of deliverables.
• Good written and spoken English .
• Verifiable project references showing the client, project period, your role and responsibilities, and a short description of your activities.

Nice to have / Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with Kubernetes, Argo CD, Protobuf, Pydantic and Grafana.
• Electrical engineering background.
• Experience with transmission system operators (TSOs) or comparable energy infrastructure companies.
• Knowledge of SCADA, PMU, power quality (PQ), protection or fault recorder data.
• Experience in critical infrastructure environments.
• Ability to produce clear technical documentation and written decision materials.
