What they need

About the Company
This fast-growing construction and property group is building a strong reputation for creating premium environments for living, working and education.

Across construction, childcare and property sectors, the group’s business is expanding steadily, creating a dynamic and fast-paced environment with an exciting pipeline of high-quality projects.

The Role
The time is right to add an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to the team to take the lead on quantity surveying across multiple luxury residential and boutique commercial projects.

You’ll be involved from the outset – receiving and reviewing tenders, working with developers, architects and consultants to understand the project, and determining how it will be costed and priced. From there, you’ll lead the QS aspects of the tender and remain closely involved throughout construction, managing budgets, contracts, claims and variations through to completion.
This is a visible, influential role where you’ll work closely with the General Manager, Project Directors and site teams, while developing strong relationships with clients and subcontractors.

They are looking for more than a great Senior QS. You’ll have the scope to challenge the status quo and strengthen how the QS function operates – implementing scalable systems, improving procurement processes and establishing clear reporting frameworks for the Directors. As the business continues to grow, you’ll ensure its QS processes and systems are robust enough to effectively support multiple concurrent, high-value projects.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Leading the QS aspects of the tender process – reviewing plans and specifications, liaising with developers, architects and consultants, and preparing estimates and tender pricing
  • Managing subcontractor procurement from RFQs and quote comparisons through to negotiation and appointment, while building strong relationships with key trades and suppliers
  • Managing and negotiating construction contracts, including NZS 3910 and NZS 3915, and providing commercial input throughout the contract lifecycle
  • Managing project costs throughout construction, including budgets, progress claims, subcontractor claims, variations and ongoing cost reporting
  • Working closely with clients, Project Directors and site teams to manage cost and variation discussions and keep projects commercially on track
  • Looking across the project portfolio to identify procurement efficiencies, cost opportunities and potential commercial risks
  • Improving QS processes, systems and reporting, while providing guidance and oversight to the Junior Quantity Surveyor

Your Background

  • Strong Quantity Surveying experience within the New Zealand construction sector
  • End-to-end experience from tender and estimating through to project cost management
  • Strong experience managing and negotiating construction contracts
  • Strong subcontractor procurement, negotiation and relationship management skills
  • Experience with NZS 3910 and NZS 3915 contracts
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with construction/QS software and systems
  • Strong numerical capability and a clear understanding of project costs and profitability
  • Commercial drive, lateral thinking and the confidence to question established ways of working
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build credibility with clients, consultants, subcontractors and project teams

We’re particularly interested in someone who can look beyond the immediate project in front of them – spotting opportunities, challenging how things are done and building processes that will support the next stage of the business’s growth.

Broader pre-construction, building or site management experience would also be a real advantage.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in a growing, ambitious construction business – working on exceptional projects, shaping its QS capability and having a genuine impact on how projects are priced, managed and delivered.
If you’re an experienced QS who knows your numbers, thinks commercially and sees opportunities to do things better, we’d love to hear from you.
